An unmanned commercial supply rocket bound for the International Space Station exploded moments after liftoff Tuesday evening, with debris falling in flames over the launch site in Virginia. No injuries were reported following the first catastrophic launch in NASA's commercial spaceflight effort.

An unmanned commercial supply rocket bound for the International Space Station exploded moments after liftoff Tuesday evening, with debris falling in flames over the launch site in Virginia. No injuries were reported following the first catastrophic launch in NASA's commercial spaceflight effort.

The accident at Orbital Sciences Corp.'s launch complex at Wallops Island was sure to draw criticism over the space agency's growing reliance on private U.S. companies in this post-shuttle effort.

NASA is paying billions of dollars to Orbital Sciences and the SpaceX company to make station deliveries, and it's counting on SpaceX and Boeing to start flying U.S. astronauts to the orbiting lab as early as 2017. NASA spokesman Rob Navias said there was nothing on the lost flight that was urgently needed by the six people living on the space station.

Orbital Sciences' Antares rocket blew up over the launch complex, just six seconds after the liftoff. The company said everyone at the site had been accounted for, and the damage appeared to be limited to the facilities.

No hint of trouble

Flames could be seen shooting into the sky as the sun set. There was no hint of any trouble until the rocket exploded. This was the second launch attempt for the mission. Monday evening's try was thwarted by a stray sailboat in the rocket's danger zone. The restrictions are in case of just such an accident that occurred Tuesday.

NASA-CONTRACTED CARGO ROCKET EXPLODES ON LAUNCH FOR ISS
BY FRANK FUHRIG, DPA

An unmanned cargo vessel bound for the International Space Station exploded on the launching pad Tuesday evening in at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia.

NASA tweeted on its International Space Station feed that there had been an "accident 6 seconds after liftoff."

The rocket lifted off just above its own height before an apparent explosion from its engines. The rocket shuddered, fell nearly vertically back to the ground and blew up in an orange fireball, engulfing the launch pad.

The blastoff of the Antares rocket, operated by private company Orbital Sciences, started as scheduled at 6:22 pm (2222 GMT).

"NASA and Orbital Sciences Corp are gathering data on the failure of the Orbital CRS-3 six seconds after launch," NASA said on its website.

A few minutes after the mishap, a mission controller instructed launch workers "to secure the facility and collect all data."

The unmanned Cygnus cargo spacecraft atop the rocket was loaded with more than 2,200 kilogram of food, material for experiments and hardware for the orbiting space station.

This is a subtle bid by NASA to wrest control of space from others and re-establish their stranglehold. Maybe NASA should shift over and let those with commitment and vision have a try. The empire building, clock-watchers at NASA are past their sell-by date. Space exploration by committee is passé. It’s a frontier – mental backflips that justify scrubbing the mission at the slightest hint of danger, don’t advance the cause at all. By definition, space exploration is hazardous (duh). Far more meaningful to die advancing the cause of space travel, than the meaningless death as cannon fodder retaking hill 456 to satisfy the warmongering ambitions of some general where a 20% casualty rate is regarded as ‘acceptable’.
