Lazarus Mazingane, the so-called Nasrec serial killer and rapist, regrets his crimes, The Sowetan reported on Thursday.
"I killed and destroyed innocent lives. Many mothers and fathers don't have children because of me," he was quoted as saying.
"I regret my past actions. I ignored my inner man and we all have an inner man."
He was speaking at the department of correctional services' 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children campaign on Wednesday.
"I was convicted for 17 murders, 24 rapes, kidnapping, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition," he said.
Mazingane was given 17 life sentences and over 700 years' imprisonment by the High Court in Johannesburg on December 3 2002.
In handing down sentence at the time, Judge Joop Labuschagne described Mazingane as a "cruel and inhuman person" who showed no remorse, and should be permanently removed from society.
