The National Assembly has finally passed the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Amendment Bill.

The bill has been passed with 12 abstentions; 266 members supported the bill and 52 MPs voted against it.

The bill was put on hold for about 17 months after Doctors for Life successfully challenged the legislation in the Constitutional Court. It will now be sent to the National Council of Provinces for concurrence.

The bill provides for, among others, registered midwives and nurses (who have undergone prescribed training) to perform terminations of pregnancy.

Great news, its in a way also sad new, but at least our government is thinking sensibly on this.

An unborn child also have the right to live - and now it's taken away. :(

Rather sterilize the parents so that they can't have more babies.

Especially those who don't want to care for their children.
 
As much as i'm against abortion, Would you allow your Daughter/Wife/Girlfriend/Sister to have an abortion should she find out she's pregnant after being raped? Would you do it should you find out that the fetus (without a heartbeat (yet)) is deformed to an extent that it may impact on its/your quality of life?

Or... if the womb wall has a problem, or if you are HIV infected, or if its going to be born without enough organs to survive a couple of hours. Nothing in life is black or white. I am pretty sure everyone here is both pro-life and pro-choice.... but life never turns out how we expect.

Rape should be the only exception.

EXACTLY! - There are lots of reasons why women could and should abort. As far as i understand they are legally allowed to abort a fetus before the heart (i think) starts beating.

But... I think everybody could agree that if someone is sleeping around and has a abortion purely because they were naughty, or don't want a child - That is wrong, they should have a law against something like that!.

Easy for you to say, till you find yourself with a moral dillema where saying no is not an option!

I don't like abortion! I happen to know some detail about the procedure - it ain't pretty at all!

Would you like if this is what your girlfriend would go thru just for a quick thrill without a condom!

They push a tool called The "Booms Currette" into the uterus and they scratch the wall of the uterus, thereafter they wash it out, thereafter administer a drug that causes the uterus to contract.

Otherwise if the fetus is more developed, they use another tool that clamps the scull of the baby, and crushes it to help getting it out, thereafter administer a drug to contract the uterus!

Either procedure has ALOT of blood involved - which can cause the patient to bleed to death if it becomes uncontrollable.

These two are surgical options they preform in theatre which i believe even theatre staff refuse to do because of the graphical nature!

These procedures could also very well leave the patient sterile or cause future complications should she decide to have a child!.

Tough one but who are you to decide whether someone's life will be tolerable or not? It's like extreme euthanasia.

Yea it is a tough one!

But, would you rather have a brain dead child that requires a ventilator to survive, alltho there is braindamage, and he/she will never have a normal life, who will care for this child/person when nobody wants him/or her because most or all of the time it becomes a burden for the family!

Its not my decision as a male to make, but rather the mother/family and doctor!

Very tough one!.

After 27weeks the fetus has a heartbeat which is legally the cutoff date for abortions(not sure what the new law here states)
