Navy Commandos Rescue American Kidnapped in Niger

U.S. Special Operations forces conducted a predawn raid in neighboring Nigeria to free the American before he could be sold to terrorists.
WASHINGTON — U.S. Special Operations commandos carried out a predawn raid on Saturday to rescue an American citizen who had been kidnapped this week from his home in southern Niger.

Commandos from the Navy’s elite SEAL Team 6 rescued the American, Philip Walton, 27, after tracking the phones of his attackers to a hide-out in neighboring northern Nigeria, U.S. officials said.

“U.S. forces conducted a hostage rescue operation during the early hours of 31 Oct. in northern Nigeria to recover an American citizen held hostage by a group of armed men,” Jonathan Hoffman, the chief Pentagon spokesman, said in a statement on Saturday.

What the hell was he doing there?

Son of a missionary, so religiously active himself I'd assume. And American. In a country with an active Islamic insurgency.

Some people are stupid.

Still an American in a country with an Islamic insurgency.

Both the French and UK governments issue travel warnings.

France opens 'terrorist murder case' in Niger aid worker killings

French prosecutors on Monday said they were launching an investigation into "terrorist murder" of at least six humanitarian workers in Niger.

The aid workers and their local guide were shot dead by gunmen on Sunday in southwestern Niger. It was initially thought the gunmen targeted tourists.

The workers were associated with Paris-based NGO ACTED and Geneva-based IMPACT Initiatives. The NGOs condemned "in the strongest terms the senseless and barbaric killing of our colleagues and their guide."

Far safer places to be farming.

Yeah but not much more stupid than an SA farmer. Likely far more SA farmers murdered in SA and yet..

You know farming was secondary to his missionary work there.
I suppose if you wear god on your sleeve, one tends to get lot of respect automatically, in a specific god circle at last.

No idea. I don't know him personally. He could even be on the payroll of the US military and farming is his cover. Can only go on reports.

Definite movie material right there. Should hit cinema's in 2 years.
