Hi guys,

This is my near final build:

Motherboard MSI X58 Pro-E R 1,999.00
CPU Core i7 920 R 2,848.00
RAM OCZ DDR3 1333MHZ PLATINUM 3GB CL7 R 650.00
Hard Drive WD Caviar Black 1TB R 1,180.00
Graphics Card Force3d ATI 4890 1GB OC R 2,281.00
DVD Writer Samsung SH-S223F R 269.00
Case CoolerMaster Gladiator 600 R 568.00
PSU OCZ ModxStream Pro 500W R 860.00

TOTAL R 10,655.00

There are two things I'm worried about :
- Does anyone have the MSI x58 pro-e motherboard because I've read that the IOH gets very hot?
- Will the 500W PSU be enough for this computer, and will it be enough if I want to upgrade to a DX11 card later?

Seeing as you're spending so much on your rig already, just put in the extra money for a psu with more oomph. Look at the Corsair HX620

i would also swap the samsung dvd writer for an lg one:)

Your PSU will definitely be too little if you plan on:
a. Getting another Force3d ATI 4890 and running them in CrossFire
b. You start overclocking your components -> Besides heat, poor quality of current from a substandard PSU can do a lot of damage, esp. to memory and m/board.
c. When you start overclocking them components, you are gonna need plenty of cooling - either mechanical or liquid - which will eat up even more Watts.
d. you get another 2 hard drives.

Remember the GPU sucks power proportional to how heavy its loaded. If you are rendering Crysis full balls on a 1080i screen you gonna need at least 350W on an independent rail just for the GPU.

Few more tips:
Seat your CPU properly, with thermal paste, and watch out for dust, etc getting into the pinholes. I had a underperforming system a while back caused by a flake of thermal paste interfereing with one of the CPU's contacts. Bleh!

Remove all stickers from fans, esp. the one on your graphics card. I almost lost an NVidia once cos the sticker flew off and got stuck in the fan between the casing, making a horrible noise and damaging the blades.

Otherwise.. happy sailing... that Core i7 is gonna blow your socks off - JUST PLS DO US A FAVOUR AND RUN A 64bit OS on it... and if you feel itchy to upgrade somthing.. go for more memory: I have a core i7 running w/ 8Gb RAM (OC to 1800Mhz) and holy smokes does it fly....

If you search HX620 whine, you find a lot of results which is a bit off putting. Plus I don't think it has a 8 pin PCI-Express cable which could be used for future upgrades.

did you just call me a whine :-/

it does have the 8 pin pcie connector, they made 2 revisions of the psu. Go to page 2 or 3 of the pc hardware section. I posted a thread about a PSU recommendation and the HX came up...

i don't recommend the Samsung dvd writer because the have a high failure rate

It seems that the HX620 has problems with coil or inductor whine under load

I just changed to the OCZ ModxStream Pro 600W which has had very good reviews on the web and is cheaper than the corsair

The failure of the drive has been fixed with the latest firmware
