Posting here because it's my health, wealth and relationship with strangers ;)

I was at Checkers, Emmarentia picking up milk. On the way out the store, a black guy said, "Hello" as I walked past him. I turned around, and he put his hand out, so I shook it, and he said that he thought I was a friend of his. He then proceeded to prattle on about this friend of his while he patted me on the shoulder, and then said how his friend carries something here, while patting me on my pocket. Two seconds later he tried to put his hand in my pocket.

So I grabbed his hand and said something like, "No! What are you doing?"

He started talking nineteen to the dozen about black and white and all sorts, so I made my way to the car and he followed me. Told him to stay away, and he just put his hand up to "high five" which I did, got in my car and fscked off.

Thought afterwards I should have gone back into Checkers, but my immediate thought was just to get out of the situation.

Doesn't sound like a very schneaky pickpocket if it was that obvious... Makes you wonder what he was after ;)

In Umtata the fsckers try to get a jump on you by shaking your hand while another one comes from behind. Just like in your case they try to distract you rather than do it without being noticed at all.

This happened to me once as well, fortunately I saw them looking at me and at each other while I was waiting outside for a meeting. When the presumed leader of the two put his hand out to greet me, I shook his - but with my thumb I pushed his knuckles inwards and crushed his hand in mine and stared him down. The swine quickly went into apologetic mode calling me his friend a few times and repeatedly saying sorry. His friend must've picked up on this and walked away.

One of the advantages of weighing 100kgs is those xhosa fsckers don't match up in size...just like the d00s who tried to steal my mom's car found out.

I've honestly had enough of these bastards.

A friend of mine lost his cellphone in a similar way. A arb dude come up to him with the usual "Hi, how you been, long time etc". The dude then moved in for a hug at the last moment pulled away as if he was surprised. Apologized saying he thought he was someone else. 5-10 mins later we noted his phone was gone. Apparently this has been going around in the JHB north area of late.

Trust me, if I don't know you you don't come near me! You people are too nice for your own good, I don't trust anyone!

That's the annoying part as well. Being 80kg and 6ft1, I would have thought I wouldn't be first choice :p

This happened to a friend of mine in CPT on Tuesday night.
K@k thing is that she's such a friendly person and now feels that that's what led to her losing a phone - so much for just being nice!

I am with you on that 100%! But I watched the whole thing from about 5 meters away. This dude was slick and moved in so quick. My mate is by far not the touchy-feelly type at all. The dude caught him out of the blue and we were both like WTF? afterwards.

Did he enjoy it maybe?.... all this hugging with other dudes, it kinda has an effect on some. :D

I had a drunken oke try to pick pocket me once while on my way home from the shop. He wasn't good at it at all so when I felt it I swung around and gave him a leftie. :) I'm not big built but being 6ft2 seemed to enable me to plant it solidly on the bridge of his nose.

Boy I'd love to catch one of these fckers in action - I'd beat the living daylights out of him!

I thought the same thing too, up until it actually happened. There I am, holding four litres of milk and my car keys. I'm on the quiet side of the parking lot. There are other people around, but you don't know if they're 'with' him or not. Even if they're not with him, they see you start beating up a black guy, they might intervene and sort out who's right and wrong later.

There are other ways I could have handled the situation, and I don't necessarily think the way I did was best. But at the end of the day I got away with my health and my wealth, so I can't complain. If you're going to escalate, you better be damn sure you can finish it.
