Im trying to find the medical name for a certain type of neck injury:
The tendons around the spine have snapped and there is basically no support for the spine. I have been told that it is a high risk injury because the neck could snap at the slightest trauma, leaving the person a quadriplegic.

I'm trying to google this to find out more, because someone in my family is going in for emergency surgery tonight to rectify it. I'm getting mixed info on what is going to happen and I really don't want to hassle the people at ground zero for information right now. Anyone know the correct term to search? I have searched neck and spine, tendon and spinal cord, but I cannot find anything on this.

I found out more details, she is in surgery atm. They are taking cartilage from her hip and making a 'on the bone' cast for the part of the spine that is affected. Its all standard procedure except for the fact that she is so young - she is 6.. Stressful time none the less.

Problem with someone that young is it's hard to make them 'take it easy' after the op.

How did this happen though?

My sister in law was taking her kids to school on Friday morning when another woman taking her daughter to school shot out in front of her. She was going the speed limit, 120 on that road afiak and she t-boned the other woman. The other woman was coming out of a housing complex. Apparently there have been quite a few accidents there because its a stop street leading onto a dual carriageway with a high speed limit. They have been petitioning for a robot for ages. If it wasn't for the fact that they where in an A4 and buckled in i'm sure it would have ended in tragedy. My sister in law suffered broken ribs, a broken foot and plenty of other bruising/abrasions, her son suffered a broken wrist, a concussion and a couple of broken ribs, and her daughter broke the opposite wrist, suffered a concussion and this neck injury.
The other womans daughter is stable also, but she (the woman) suffered both arms and legs broken and one of her arteries around the heart burst so she is in a citical condition, again afaik. The impact was on the drivers side. Theyre in CT so we are too far away to be any kind of help, and kind of out of the loop.

Its a sad situation, a moment of bad judgment on the part of the other woman may cost her her life, besides all the other stuff. I know I've had my fair share of bad judgments on the road, carelessly skipped a stop street myself recently. There was no oncoming traffic, but there might have been. Tho the worst would have been a fender bender if there was, the speed limit being 60. Having to cross a dual carriageway with a speed limit of 120 every morning must be a nightmare.

Sheesh, that's madness. I hope everything turns out allright for all involved.

agree, hope all comes to a happy ending.

My brother is studying to be a doc so he would be able to tell me but he is somewhere out in the kruger at the moment as part of his studies.

Ok we just found out, the surgery went well, they where able to use screws instead of having to graft cartilage. They where initially doubtful that screws would work because her neck is so thin. That is incredibly good news because they did not have to cut her hip and they will not have to operate on the neck again for a year.

They also found that she was leaking spinal fluid, so it was a miracle that she was not paralyzed from the accident or between Friday and Saturday when the found the issue and she was moving around.

Shew, I did not realize how stressed I was till right now.

Good to hear. Any news on the other driver?

JEEEZ wowee :( Try not to blame the other woman so much...sounds like a road like on my street on my corner and people speed down like 5 blocks not expecting a stop sign and skip and T bone another car(Happens petty often ).I hope everything goes great for all of you :(

Well, its is her fault. Tho, like I said, its a bad intersection. A small error in judgment there may cost her her life, whereas the same error in judgment at a normal stop street results in nothing more than a fender bender. Again: Having to cross a dual carriageway with a speed limit of 120 every morning must be a nightmare.
