Seatools?

You want access to the drive's S.M.A.R.T data; *obviously* you want to check if anything has been reported as failing, but also take a long, hard look at the number of hours the drive has run and see if that matches with what your prospective seller has been advertising...

i cant seem to run any tests on this hdd using seatools and it doesnt show in diskcheckup??
its a 2,5" usb external drive

im busy formating my drive in dos
what will happen if i remove the drive before it completes?

ok so i did the swop

i couldnt test my drive or the one i got
must be some sort of usb limitation??

Well, if you're running Windows, an easy tool to use would be HDTune. The free version will do the job just fine. Allows you to check SMART data and check the drive for bad sectors.
