Need a new car. Considering a Jeep Compass

Hey guys,

So my current car (2009 Golf Rox 1.6), is dying. I seriously need a new car. I am not the flashy type, hence me keeping my golf for so long :)

I have been seeing a few Jeep Compasses for under R200K second hand, and was wondering how they fare reliability wise.

I am totally clueless with them, but they seem to be decent from what I can find on the net.

The alternative is a Renault Megane, which I adore, especially the 2016-2017 model, but slightly out of my price range.

Any first hand experiences with the compass that I should be aware of?
 
What do you mean by dying?
If you can't maintain a mk 1 Golf mechanically, I would NOT recommend buying a secondhand Jeep or Renault.
Maybe try Toyota next

Dying, means old. Golf's are not the most well built vehicles. I am tired of replacing doorhandles, rubbers and the like. They are cheap to maintain, but I seriously do not have the time to constantly fix every little thing that constantly breaks. My wife drives a Terios, and we have driven an extra 100 000km on the vehicle that my golf. Not a single days problem, at all. So, in comparison, my Golf is dying.
 
There are so many cars to choose from in that price range, which are far more reliable, why are you limiting yourself to the two?

Also when you say you need a new car you don't really mean brand new, do you?
 
Why not upgrade to a Polo? We've had two. Both have severed us incredibly well. But it also depends on how you treat your car.
If reliability is a primary concern, I personally wouldn't touch a second hand Compass under 200k. At that price you're outside of warranty and they don't have the most stellar reliability records.

R200K is still under warranty. Its a R299K vehicle. Polo's serve 19 year olds. Not a family man. Also, the 2018 Polo is around the corner, but again, the price will be astronomical. VW and price conscious people do not mix. R180K for a Vivo?? Yeah, VW lost me.

Do you mean Jeep Renegade or Compass? I know the Renegade goes for R299k new...
I know families who have Polos, and coming from a Golf Rox, it would be a serious upgrade. As for VW and price conscious people not mixing, I disagree. There's good reason it's still the most popular car on the road. It's still a great car and offers decent value, including excellent re-sale value, and you could get one (not a Vivo) which is a couple years old for under 200k. Anyway, you're convinced against that one, so nevermind. Was just a thought. Maybe a year old Mazda 3? Nice (and reliable) cars.
 
Jeep Compas is shyt expecially when the service plan expires. Also the gearbox is one of the the worst I've ever experienced.
IMO
Don't buy a American second hand vehicle unless it's a class ie Mustang.

Jeez that seems like a bit of a safety risk. :)
 
OP I haven't driven the Compass or even sat inside one, but presumably you want it for the SUV factor?

I would have a look around at other options like the Nissan Qashqai or maybe even Ford Ecosport.

For that matter maybe even an Audi Q3 or VW Tiguan but not sure if the price would fit.

I would personally stay away from Jeep Compass unless you wait for the new one. As many have said they don't exactly have the best track record on reliability . A few years ago when I test drive the Jeep, in my opinion the the interior of the Patriot is poor quality with cheap plastics and flimsy switches and while the finish is low rent too.
Safety, however, is not good too, it received a two star crash tests from euroncap.

How about a Mazda3 or Honda Civic? If you prefer SUV, there's not much choice for R200k with low mileage under warranty. Renault Duster? Suzuki Vitara or Honda BRV price slightly higher, but cheaper than most rivals.
If you're still interested in a Megane, there is one 2017 model around R200k

While I like a Meg I am hesitant calling that Meg 3 a MY2017. Meg 4 replaced the Meg 3 locally & internationally in 2016. Iirc Meg 4 hit SA during Q3 side.

Of course that Meg 3 could just be last of the run out models registered recently.

Either way hard to argue the value proposition.
 
Two peole I know had them for not more than 5months due to very high fuel consumption.
