Need a new GPS

Tomtom direct input of coordinates... Gosh... From the basic navigate menu, just tap the arrow button for more options and you'll be able to do this... It's really not hard top find...

Sent from my HTC Desire using MyBroadband Android App

Thanx for the sarcasm. Then mine can't do it.

I see that Internet Connection has a special on the Garmin nuvi 1410 with blue tooth for R1650 at the moment. Cannot go wrong with that IMO :D

The TomTom products do have flaws:

The PC software, required for doing map updates via USB has a bug, which I uncovered. TomTom is aware of it but have not done anything about it. This bug could render your maps useless (due to DRM) and then you would have to purchase new maps. I fought with TomTom until they caved in and gave me a replacement set of maps! Local support it ZERO, you have to deal with a call centre in Great Britain.

The TomTom Start in particular can struggle to get a fix, taking over 4 minutes to do so. My unit has also lost its settings at least once and I had to re-enter my home address data.

Garmin imo. TomTom has bigger screens for most price points but it looks washed out if you hold it side by side w/ a Garmin.

i bought a Garmin 1310, after one week i sent it to be checked as the touch screen was not working porperly, routing took ages etc. Garmin replaced it a month later with another 1310. After 3 days i gave it back as well. More useless than previous one. Got a tomtom 750 live. Brilliant unit

Bought a used Nokia 5230 for my sister earlier this week, R800 gets her unlimited voice navigation in any language including Afrikaans and detailed maps that are updated free of charge when she connects her phone to her PC (Ovi Suite). No network connection required and if you ask me its the best deal out there.

Might be true, but I have found that it doesn't work so lekka when you are using it without network connection. ;)

Not quite. I use this with my E51 - locks on in less than a minute. I don't even have data enabled on my phone.

So, OP, make that another vote for Ovi Maps.

You need to update the satellite data once a month. You also don't mention where you are? I found that I could not find a fix when firing up in Hout Bay as I had not done a satellite update in months.

I now do the update before any major trip and it takes only a few seconds, even inside my flat which is rather amazing.

I've yet to find any flaw with their software, I use a legit Windows XP and do all my updates, both TomTom and XP. But it dose seem that all the problems are with the TomTom Start! I have the XL.

my freaking garmin got me lost last week

granted, its a model from 2007/8, it should bloody work considering it was valued at over R2000!!! it had me driving on the wrong road then the road disappeared on the screen. seems like it had a signal/alignment issue. it had the bitch going "re-calculating" in an american accent for about 15 minutes.

/end rant :)

I got a Nokia 5230 that came with a holder, but not a car charger or USB cable. Now I need to find cheap charger (shouldn't be hard) and the funny USB cable Nokia uses. Also, figure out how it works - I've never had a colour screen phone before. I think I'll be happy with this.

Edit: Scoop has the cable for R 9.95.

I really don't like the idea of paying TomTom over a grand a year for maps and traffic, when Nokia does it for free. Also, the Nokia's screen is higher res, even though it's smaller.

What shocked me was that only three online stores sell these in SA. CaCell wants R 150 for delivery?!?!?? Purple Fly Trading wants R 85, but doesn't take credit cards (and I don't trust them enough to do an EFT) and everyone else was either not local or way more costly. So much for competition in the cell phone market.

Byron here the owner of Purple Fly Trading. We don't accpet credit cards due to the high levels of fraud online. Also we don't accept them due to the high charges from the banks that are incurrred on our side. Usually 3 -5 % of the value and in most cases our mark up is around 5%. So I prefer not to work for the banks, they seem to be doing fine without me. :-) See this link for where we rank on SA Topsites http://www.satopsites.com/index.php?...v&cat=&start=1 We are also the No. 1 Computer Store on SA Topsites too. We have worked damn hard to get to these positions. For reviews from previous clients see here... http://admin.pricecheck.co.za/shops/reviews/. Also further rankings can be found on Alexa where you can compare which online shops have the highest SA and world rankings... Hopes this helps. :-) Anything you guys need, give me shout. Hope you have a great day.
