So I have an aging Moto G3, 1GB RAM just not cutting it anymore.

Budget is max R4000. Was eyeing the Moto G5 but doesn't seem to be freely available anywhere? Other phone I looked at was a Nokia 5, seems interesting. Main requirement is 2GB RAM and and around 5inches...

Would be grateful for a recommendation of shops and phones.

PS. The current phone is using a MTN Topup 200 contract, up for renewal in September. From what I can see on the MTN website (which is really crap), taking a free phone won't be worth it.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. 32GB Rom, 3GB Ram, 5.5 display and a battery that will give you 6 to 10hrs screen on time.

Oh, and it will give you R500 back from your budget...

^ This.

Go for Afrihost deal and get some extra data (Its dual sim so you can use their data and still keep your top-up) or you can go the gray import route and get one for R2000 (Bar DHL + Customs costs) from sites like Gearbest.

Personally I recon the R600+ saved on option 2 is not worth the hassles in case you have warranty claims.

Used a G3 before and Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is the same size as a Moto + flip cover.

Edit: if you insist on 5" you can also look at Xiaomi Redmi 4X For R2800 see Takealot or Xiaomi Redmi 4A
I would pick a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 if I was you. Xiaomi Redmi 4a and 4x have weaker CPU's.

Instead of the Nokia 5 get the 6, MTN has it for R3800. If it was my money I would take it over the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 as the build quality is miles ahead and you get gorilla glass.

Thanks, didn't even look/consider a Nokia after the last few years.

Problem is its a Snapdragon 430... that is Xioami 4a/4X territory. ie: R2000/R2800 in Xioami vs R3800 for Nokia 6/Moto G5. I am sure you can get proper covers for the Xioami for less than R1000 you saving ;)

Only reason to pick Nokia above Xiaomi is camera if photo's are your main drive.

Edit: I would still pick the Note 4 deal from Afrihost above all.

Thanks guys, interesting options...

Moto G5 not sure why it's not available locally? Seems like Plus is the model to get.
Xiaomi Note 4 does seems solid, ugly UI? Stuck on Android 6?
Nokia 6 is quite sexy, nice price. Ships straight with Android 7.1.1
Nokia 5 nice size, price. Assuming it's few hundred R's cheaper than the 6 and also 7.1.1

No views on Samsung A3 2017?

Amazon will ship the G5 Plus to your door in around a week. That's pretty available.

So after some much checking...

Nokia 6 looks quite large and hardware is questionable. MTN has it for R3700
Moto G5 Plus 64/4GB you shared seems like an unbeatable phone...added a tracker ;)

The Xiaomi Note 4X is running on Android 7 at the moment.

Personally that would be my choice too. The 2 days of battery life with average usage sold it for me.

:confused:Whenever I look at anything on Amazon it says "does not ship to South Africa". How do you overcome thsi?

Use a forwarding company like Aramex Global Shopper (US$5 to join and R200 per package under half Kg) or buy from China using geekbuying or dx or banggood,...........
