So my Netgear DG834GT got zapped by lightning yesterday and I'm desperately in need of a sub R1000 reliable router.

Recommendations?

And where's the best place to get one asap?

You can get 3 of these. If one dies on you, you have t2 backups

I just got a netgear DGN2200 from PC international, R975 - wireless N, gigabit lan. Awesome router.

Have a look at the TP-Link routers from Uniterm Direct (www.dbg.co.za). Please note that ALL their prices excludes VAT.

The cheapest ADSL router with 802.11n wireless that I know of is a Planet ADSL modem/router available from Scoop Distributions, but I don't think they sell to individuals.

My favorite is the D-Link DSL-2500U (R300 or less) in combination with TP-Link WR1043ND with DD-WRT firmware (R599 ex VAT and excl. DD-WRT firmware installation fee).
This way, if your ADSL modem gets zapped, you simply replace it with another cheap ADSL modem like the D-Link DSL-2500U, instead of throwing another R1k down the drain!
