Hi guys,

I recently decided to get myself a little upgrade. I currently drive a 1.4 Polo (Old shape) and I am looking to trade in for one of these 2 cars.

Year models are not at all new, looking at 2005-2008 models of these cars.

Any advice from someone driving one of these 2 cars or things to keep in mind;look out for?

Thanks

Audi FTW. The soundproofing is better, more luxury, etc. When SWAMBO was looking for a new car we test drove both - the Golf sounded more like a tractor than a car, the Audi was quieter and better finished.

Audi. I'm not so sure about the soundproofing etc. as they are in the same segment and use the same components, but I prefer Audi interiors to pretty much any other brand.

Thanks for the feedback thus far guys. It seems like the general choice is Audi. Does anyone know on what mileage the important/expensive services are? I am looking at taking a maintenance plan regardless tho.

With a used TDi, the risk is whether the previous owner drove it like a po@s - in which case you may be looking at turbo failure & cracked exhaust manifold in the long run. But these Audis are pretty robust, so obviously the lower the mileage, the better.

Also, get the DSG/S-tronic gearbox - much better drive than the manual. If you do get one with a catalyst, remove it asap. Unfortunately the later models have the DPF and you can't remove that.

Always let the car idle for 1-2min after a long drive, only use 50ppm diesel, add some 2-stroke oil every 2nd fillup and a bottle of diesel injector cleaner every 5000km or so, and it should last you a long time :)

Also, join the Audi forum, plenty of good advice/tips there: http://www.audiclubsa.org.za/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl

Looks like you've made up your mind already! :) Just wanted to say: whenever you are faced with the Audi vs. VW choice, ALWAYS GO for Audi! ;) Ever heard of a phrase:"VW rattles!" Let's just say I used to think that it's a myth. All the best.

I just bought a 2006 golf 2.0 tdi, the turbo failed after 60km after taking delivery, was replaced under the extended warranty.

Exact same motor as the audi. Out of interest a remanufactured turbo is around R6000 with a 12 month guarentee.

I payed R139000 all incl. Has ony 72000km on it, and in excellent condition for a 5 year old car.

I'm enjoying it a lot, just wish I could have gotten one with a dsg gearbox.

I drive mostly open road and average 4.8 l/100km.

Oh and its quiet and doesn't have a single rattle. I also have a 2008 gti dsg and also no rattles.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

Thanks for all the response. It is greatly appreciated. I went out of the office to go get some stuff for our karts (raceday hobby) and saw both the A3 and Golf 5 TDI's. They both look good I must say. I am just looking for a reliable car that wont give too many hasstles and break a budget on services. I will contact the agent at Audi that I am currently talking to and ask if they can get a hold of the DSG model, as it sounds like the better buy.

I checked auto trader now and saw this DSG model. I like the interior! http://search.autotrader.co.za/www/cars_advert?id=201122187690103
Thoughts?

Mileage a bit high, and I wouldn't go for a light interior. Go for one from an Audi dealer, it comes with a 2yr warranty. That way you have a safety net.

How about these two? second one is manual though:

The price on the second one is a little too high for my budget (getting married in Jan :/ )

If I can get a A3 DSG with decent mileage for +- R130 000 I would be one happy man. But on that note it might be wishful thinking. lol

Just get the golf, If wanted to spend more then I would have gone the audi route too.

I would definitely go for the Audi, more of a premium car... Love the looks a bit more than the Golf, and its an AUDI....

dont get a dsg if you are gonna own the car outside the maintenance plan

Yeah, but I still prefer the looks of the Audi :)

I agree - the Audi's styling is better than the Golf.

You'll find the Audi and the Golf have almost exactly the same interiors and have identical instrument clusters.
