Need advice for sound on t.v.

6 months ago my father-in-law bought a Samsung LCD t.v and a Pioneer dvd player. Now they are saying that they are having a hard time hearing the t.v. There is nothing wrong with the t.v., they are just getting up in years and are having a hard time hearing.

The wife and I have decided to get a sound system for their t.v. but all we are finding are home theater systems with d.v.d players which none of us need. Also we really can't afford the R6000 units that have been shown to us.

We need something simple, easy to use, something that can help them hear and something that is affordable to us. Our budget is very tight.

Do we even have to get a home theater system, or can some other speaker system be plugged in?

If the TV has RCA out you can use any speaker set that can take RCA audio,so depends on the telly

Get some small amplified multimedia speakers and attach them to the headphone out on the TV, which has the same (3.5mm stereo jack) socket. Then position the speakers behind where they sit, above ear level. My wife only has 40% hearing in one ear and this enabled her to hear what is going on.

With DSTV now, you can also switch on subtitles which help a lot.

Try going into the menu options on the TV, see if it has different settings - such as NORMAL - MOVIE - MUSIC - SPEECH - THEATER and so on - then set it to SPEECH - this reduces the BASS frequencies and boosts the MID-RANGE & TREBLE (VOCAL) frequencies.

If it has a PERSONAL or CUSTOM setting you can also adjust the graphic equalizer to reduce BASS and then increase the MID-RANGE & TREBLE settings manually until the right clarity is available - the best time is to do it with something like the news or a documentary program with lots of voice audio.

This option is the cheapest you can get. New ones you can get for under R300. At Cash Converters/Crusaders you will could find it cheaper.
