Need advice on a new PC

Howdy,

I'm planning to upgrade my current setup to the following: (Budget is around 4k, prices according to prophecy, I intend to buy there)

Intel Core i5-2500K Quad-Core LGA1155 3.3GHz Boxed Processor (Sandybridge) - R2104.21
Intel DH67CL-B3 "Cold Lake" LGA1155 DDR3 PCI-E x16 ATX - R940.50
2 x Kingston KVR1333D3S8Nx/4G VALUERAM 4GB DDR3-1333 1.5v CLx Desktop - R516.64 - Replaced with:
2 x Corsair CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9B Vengeance 4GB DDR3-1600 1.5v CL9 Desktop - R624.50
Gigabyte ODIN 585W 24-Pin Power Supply - R581.86
Total: R4251.07

I'm not sure about the PSU though, I'd like it to be as quiet as possible, and I'm under the impression that this CoolerMaster 500W might be quieter. Will the 500W be enough? And more importantly, will there be a noise difference?

The PSU needs to power the components listed above, as well as 3 sata HDDs, 1 DVD drive and a NVidia 240GT.

I'd also like an overall opinion on the build, I'll be using it for resource intensive programs (Matlab, Visual Studio, Blender, AutoCAD and gaming).

Any suggestions?

Some tips to note:
If you use Matlab/Blender/AutoCAD to any professional extent then you are better off with the i7. It offers a 25-35% decrease in processing time.
If you are planning on overclocking your CPU (hence the 2500k and not the 2500), then get a motherboard that supports decent overclocking. The Intel mobo's don't allow you to exceed 33x (compared to 58(?) on ie my Asus board).
Your RAM is fine, but I paid (at Rebeltech) R560 for 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance 1600 1.5V. It would be a better buy since it's performance RAM.
Either power supply will be sufficient for your setup, since you are using a GT240.

Thank you for the advice.

I did take a look at the i7, but it is around R900 more. I will reconsider it though.

I took the 2500k if I might need to overclock somewhere in the future, but its not an immediate concern. Is there any specific motherboard that you would advise?

Thanks for the heads up on the RAM, I'll check prophecy's prices.

If I upgrade my gpu to say, a 550 in the future, would the CoolerMaster do, or should I rather take the ODIN?

I would rather go Asus P8P67
also would rather get a 700W PSU

buuut I'm waiting for ivybridge which is around the corner now :)

I'm gonna get 2 x 4 GB modules.

The 550 was just an example, but okay, would 500W suffice for a 560?

Thanks, interesting guide.

Can't find the asus now, but it seems they all max out (in this price range) at 16GB RAM. Intel goes up to 32GB.
It seems I don't really need a 700W PSU for my needs.
