Hi all,

So I'm still loving my core i7960 even though she is getting a little old , however due to virtualisation tasks and pushing my ram a bit hard I think its time to replace the memory , any one have any good recommendations or sources ? I'm hoping to find 3 or 6 x 4 gigs sticks at either 1600 or 1800

I doubt that you'll see a performance increase by using DDR3 1800MHz.

I'd say find the cheapest DDR3 1600MHz modules.

At this moment I'd say go for 6x 4GB: http://www.rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=7169 @ R200 each = R1200 !
I don't know if these modules include XMP, so you might have to manually overclock them to 1600MHz.

Unfortunately the Team Xtreem Dark modules that support XMP are sold out and they cost slightly more.

How much RAM do you currently have and what virtualization tasks do you want to do? I recently had to upgrade my office's i7 860's RAM from 12GB to 16GB and it was well worth it.
Now I just want to upgrade my home i7 940's RAM from 6GB to 12 or 18GB ;)

If you are doing stuff as stability critical as virtualization, best to go with ram thats on your motherboards QVL list. That way you can be sure that they were tested properly.

I rate kingston the highest, with corsair a close second.

FYI, I'm still doing most of my virtualisation on a Q9550. Your 960 is NOT old.

The main reason I'm replacing it is bsods relating to memory management , got 3 x 2 axes axeram modules in at the moment. The virtualization is mainly for mounting various client environments as a local workspace
