Need advice on new line please

Hi guys. Ive moved in to a new house and the people that I rent it from installed an ADSL line in the house.

I would like to activate it and then do my data through iAfrica for online gaming.

Now do I need to put in a different line into the house for having a 4mb/s line? Or how does this work? No clue what I'm doing lol.

they would have most likely deactivated the phone line and adsl, you just need to phone telkom and advise them that you want a new account for that address. they will probably need to come and test the line and then activate to your name

That very same line is used, they just need to switch it up to 4mb on their side. Nothing physical is going to change on your side.

Thanks guys. Will go in to telkom tomorrow. Do I need to get anything from them? A modem or something? I only have a wireless router at the moment. And do I only rent the adsl line from telkom and then my internet usage from iAfrica?

Your wireless router is a modem you don't need anything from them. How old is your router? If it's very old, they might sell you a 'pots' filter, it's cheap and I think it helps clear noise from the line or something (someone correct me here). But most probably not necessary.

Correct about renting the line and getting data from elsewhere, another ISP. Don't know how iAfrica's prices compare, you may also want to look at Afrihost, Openweb. Or look at hellkom.co.za , where they list comparative prices for all the packages.

Telkom will let you know when your line is active. Then you just plug in your router (power and telephone line), put in your username and password you got from your ISP into the router's configuration (consult the router manual on how to get there), and you should be off!

After initial setup, everything is a breeze, and your ISP should be more than helpful over the telephone with any query you may have, basic or otherwise.
