Need advice on second hand clio sport

I'm a student and I want something quick but dont want to pay more than R130k.
I don’t care about fuel efficiency or fancy gadgets inside the car, just that it has a good engine.
I cycle to campus and only go home once every 4 weeks (pta->jhb) so I put very little km's on my car at the moment (maybe about 5k a year)

Have always liked the look of the clio sport and like the fact that it is N/A.
Found this online and called the garage, they said the car is still available and is in very good condition

anyone know if the cars engine will still be reliable with this amount on km on it? Or if the car is going to cost me a **** load of cash to maintain?

It could be a hit or a miss.
My dad has a Scenic some years ago, it ran like a dream. Only reason for selling it was because the car that was supposed to be sold was in an accident.
His next was a Megane II and it was a nightmare. He ended up losing R100k on a R200k car in just over a year. Engine worked, but pretty much everything else broke. Aircon gave issues, electric windows packed up [the controller broke], dashboard rattles, the indicators packed up, etc.
Friends of ours bought a Clio (2010 model), same problems as the Megane.

At the end of the day the car's reliability would come down to how the owner took care of it and how well a mechanic can take care of it. The Renault/Peugeot/Citroen guys seem to make a habit of hiring useless mechanics.
 
I would not recommend a French car especially a second hand one. They are the more pricey cars to maintain and repair.
 
I second PseudZ I have a Clio and BMW - the bmw is much cheaper to maintain than the Renault and less troublesome.
 
Best money for KW you can get , the dynamics of this little car , are impressive ... GOOGLE IT.
Who ever owned one loved it .IT's a Pocket Rocket ! 145 Kw (NON TURBO) , Handles curves like is bullet train , point and GO !, is like it has glue on the wheels...
Brembo BRAKES are Amazing , brakes in NO Time , in NO SPACE ,.. and you need them when it takes you less than 8 seconds to be at 100 Km/h .
The whole car gives you so much confidence that chances are that you will end up on top of a tree due to gravity laws restrictions.

The Gearbox is mental , 6th gear 120 Km about 4000 RPM , red line is at 8000 RPM!
Not everyone cup of tea ;)

All RS come from the same factory , DIEPPE ,and from that factory come the BEST Renault can do ..
is not a bloody Dacia Sandero , not even a normal Clio.

All Megane's are Lemons , known fact ! , mostly if they come from 3rd World Country factories , Brazil, Argentina, Romania, not sure if its build here too .

Its not cheap to maintain but No other car in this KW Range is! PERIOD !
is actually cheaper than its competitor by far, on any respect...


The biggest problem is to find mechanics that would like to take chances with French Cars , forget about the dealers
... as last option they are NO worst than any official car dealer out there .

not a problem with parts (from Renault or Aftermarket)

Google clio Sport forums or Clio 197 forums you will find all the info.

If you want to know more just ask , I'm no expert but I own one for the past year, NOT trouble free but everything was solved under normal expectations,

Troubles = SAME AS ANY OTHER CAR I HAD ; or better

Regarding that specimen looks food in pictures , but you need to see it personally ...
Looks to too well priced to don't say cheap.

Mileage is Okish , little high for 20009 ? , not sure ,
90000km was last cambelt change as per Renault instructions (between R6000 trying to save money (Mostly labor) and R 10000 if you do it right , variator , water pump , etc ) , but it should've been done already .
Check the gearbox , mostly coming down 4 to 3rd , must be noise free .. , check oil on top the engine Left side of the manifold .

Anyway 2nd hand car its a lottery . good luck

Sportish car, and cheap. You do the math who you think the previous driver was. Car was probably redlined every day. And Daniel is talking nonesense when he says maintenance is not more than any other car. If certain things, ie the electronics break, prepare to pay out of your ass to have it fixed. Some of the dealerships won't even be able to fix it - Renault, Peugeot, Citroen - dodgiest service you can get.

Save yourself the misery. The bit of extra speed is not worth the lottery of not having a car at all when things go pear shaped.

2nd: Of course IS NOT THE SAME, go get Chery
3rd: Of course is not the same , Lether , plastic , who cares , its a jacket too .
4th: Of course is not the same , having fun and Not having fun is the same , isn't ?
5th: Electronics are made , mostly , by BOSCH , that happens to be a German company, that happens to be the same as BWM, Merc , VW, and all the reliable cars have ... but they dont break , No '... of course they don't

you can take the Gautrain and walk to your office , Its the same !

PS: "the bit of extra speed is more of a Petabyte than a bit" , this reminds me shouldn't we get old Dial up 38kbps accounts? , for internet access , at the end of the day ... its the same

Not sure if trolling, or high.
 
If you want to save money you could also buy Car with:
14" wheels , Tires are cheaper, No mags its just superfluous bling .
No rear disks , brake shoes last longer than brake pads (argumentable)
No Abs , No Stability Control , No air con , Not too much power (It's dangerous), has to be small (less to panel bit)
No xenons , no need for sound system , No leather , no more than 1000 cc,

1969 Fiat 500 would be great fit .

Buy a paper bag make two holes and wear it so nobody can see you are driving it ...

But that's not the question, is it wise to buy one with 100K on the clock? You and I both know that car was driven to the max for those 100K and the paint is just waiting to peel.

Back to the subject
Lets do the math , what can you buy with this money ? , put an extra R20 000 on top if you wish
Please compare year , condition, , mileage , specs, equipment.

Then check how much will it cost if you need to fix something.
Like , lets say , you need to change tires, or do brakes, cambelt change ,anything .. then you could possibly say what is a good deal or not ?

I think the batteries or you sarcasm detector are gone , I would recommend ... you to do a quick run to the nearest petrol station to buy new ones ... or you could be mistaken by naive .
 
You are still talking trash. 100K on the clock, driven by a young guy probably just as hotheaded as you. This is not a good buy - it will break. And you've only had your car for 1 year. I had to service my wife's Frenchie for 4 long years, and I can confidently tell you the dealerships are a joke, and you struggle to find mechanics to fix the car if anything out of the ordinary breaks.

Hello Peter it. See Renault and Peugeot at the top of the pile with the most complaints?
I suppose all those complaints are people just like me with misleading information and a hidden agenda -_-

Good cars, crap after sales service. And second hand, nooo nooo. Stay away!

The answer is NO, is not wise to buy a second hand car with 100k on the clock , NOT any , of any maker ...
Is not wise to buy sport car period.
If you do it is because you want and you can
On the other hand , I've done more than 30000 km in my Clio 197 and I did have the same things I would if I bought any other car ,
Battery, Starter , Brakes, Thermostat , I did again the cambelt because I'm over cautious , but there is no reason to think it couldn't have done another 60k Km with the previous one
I can swear that I pay less than a similar specs and quality car .

The point is , is NOT a normal Clio.

You should expect to pay for parts and service against a car of the same range.
VW Golf GTI (nut Much cheaper) not a Polo Vivo .

But a lemon its a lemon , no matter what .

You should by car by Spécimen and not by Model , a neglect GOOD car is worst than a well taken mediocre car.

And by well taken care I dont mean driven hard ..
It means .. Change brakes , disk, when they are worn out , change oil frequently with quality oil , do the cambelt on time , check suspension , etc ...

And you can still go wrong

That is why .. in any other part or the universe a second hand car is worth Nothing !!

Of course we leave here and we do what we can , and buy what we got

Buy a French car new with a warranty and motor plan.

Don't even buy a French car second hand unless you have money to burn or happen to work for the dealership.

It's not an accurate assessment tool. People are more likely to complain on Hellopeter than provide a compliment. Also, not everyone even bothers going to Hellopeter.

is exactly what I said , I quoted it just to show how irrelevant it is , and to show facts over chit chat

I f you had a bad experience , share it , fine , but is not fair to put everything on the same bag

Not so long ago Cars from Asia were dodgy. What about now ?

Car price, car parts , access to mechanics and good luck , that is !
That is your ownership experience , mostly luck . ... sadly
 
As final note: I bought the the 197 with 80kkm , I did 30kkm in a year ,
Spent some money on it and I still think that totally worth it .
I'm Happy .

I like the car so much that I would like to keep it as long as I can, and I wouldn't blink buying another one

Forgot to mention it if somebody wonders ..
It does an average of :
7L / 100 Km on highway
10.5 L / 100 km combined (this is your monthly Bill)
12.5 L / 100 in heavy traffic
