But what about best value for money? I wouldn't go above 1080p, but will game in 3D at the same res.
My 5870 is currently doing the job, but I want to go for a card that can potentially handle BF4 (not in 3d) maxed out.

It's why I was looking more at the 7970. Well mostly due to price as the GTX 680 is still around the R5.5k mark.
Perhaps I'll wait until I hear pricing rumours/details around the 9000 range of cards.

It might be better to get an AMD-based card for BF4 as it's a gaming evolved title.

QFT. For 1080p with max settings, the most I'd consider spending is about R3000 on a Radeon HD7870 LE or a Geforce GTX660 Ti/GTX760 - anything more than that is overkill, considering a Radeon HD7790/GTX650 Ti hits around 50fps in most games already.

For 2560 x 1440, the HD7870 LE/GTX660 Ti/GTX760 are the baseline options if you want to just crack playable frame rates with good visuals.

True. 7870 LE, even 7870 is enough for 1080p and high/ultra settings. Though you might have to dial down AA (FXAA and 2xMSAA should be fine).
At 1440p, those cards should be the minimum for mid/high settings depending on the game.

Depending on your budget as well, you might want to check out the MSI GTX 670 Power Edition OC for about 4500 or so. It's the cheapest custom cooled 670 and it packs a serious punch. If you overclock it to around 1200Mhz or so on the core, you're getting almost reference GTX770-like performance.

Well in your case the HD7970 would be a good consideration if you're playing in 3D. Battlefield 4 won't be much more taxing than BF3, at least not as far as DICE is concerned, and you can use the game vouchers to nab BF4 on launch day for free. The HD5870 is the equivalent of the HD7850 nowadays. I will also note that Nvidia's 3D is better implemented when you have the right monitors, whereas AMD's one is more generic and works in more places, but may need some more fiddling. Its a very niche application, so it doesn't get as much love as it should. The Oculus Rift should help push that along when it launches.

It is especially worth while if you can/want to overclock, because you can easily reach HD7970 speeds by overclocking.

I've been following this thread with interest. I'm thinking of an upgrade and toying with the idea of getting a 7870.

I can barely hear my 7950. But it depends on the case and its placing in the room.
