My poor ol AMD 6750 is currently having a hard time keeping up with the new games coming out, and it is time or an upgrade.
I have been looking a 3 options so far:
- AMD Radeon HD 7850
- AMD Radeon HD 7870
- AMD Radeon HD 7950

From what I gathered from the Googles, is that you don't really get that much more from the 7950 over the 7870 for close to the R1000 more.
Which do you guys think is better, or what comparable Nvidia cards are there in the same price/performance range (been a long time since I had a Nvidia card, so a bit out of tune with them)?

Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanx

EDIT: Budget is around the R3k mark, give or take.

Sorry, man, don't mean to hijack the thread, but can anyone lend some advice as to whether it would be better to wait for the 9000 range of cards, or to go for Powercolor 7970?

The pricepoint on the 7970 seems pretty attractive.

AMD's new Hawaii series should launch around October or so. It depends - if you're willing to wait about a month and a half for the launch of the new cards or you MUST have a 7970 right now. My view would be to wait it out. There are no major new game titles launching next month anyway - this month had many AAA-titles come out.

It would also be a good way to test a brand new AMD card on titles like BF4, COD Ghosts, AC IV etc. when they launch in October / November.

Yeah this is my viewpoint as it stands, looking at it purely from a performance point of view.
My deeper question is really whether it's worth holding out for the new 9000 series, or getting a powerful card now, knowing that the 9970 will most likely be way out of my pricerange.

I would go for the 7950 if I were you. The card is also a good overclocker.

It really depends. From wootware, you are talking about R800 odd to jump from the 7950 to the 7970, assuming you are happy with Powercolor.

Just Kidding :D

I most likely will get the 7950 card.
Just taking a well deserved holiday next week, will probably order it after I get back.

Now that I think about it, the place where we are going on holiday is less then 10km from Wootware.
Can just as well pick it up from them.

9970 should be around the GTX 780's price point. Realisitically, you're probably looking at anywhere between R 8000 - R 10000 depending on the manufacturer and the design (reference design would obviously be cheaper).
Remember, it would only make sense to get a high-end GPU like the 9970 if you intend gaming at 2560x1440 or if you simply MUST have the best possible single GPU performance on the market.

:D

I wasn't kidding. Give me your steam account details, origin, and your gaming pc.... or else I shoot the HDD....

:D

hehehe
You can't be that good a criminal if you want my Origin details....... who does that :D

I actually think I have you on my Steam friend's list.

When you see my bank account, you will hopefully feel bad enough and deposit some monies into it for me. :D

QFT. For 1080p with max settings, the most I'd consider spending is about R3000 on a Radeon HD7870 LE or a Geforce GTX660 Ti/GTX760 - anything more than that is overkill, considering a Radeon HD7790/GTX650 Ti hits around 50fps in most games already.

For 2560 x 1440, the HD7870 LE/GTX660 Ti/GTX760 are the baseline options if you want to just crack playable frame rates with good visuals.

But what about best value for money? I wouldn't go above 1080p, but will game in 3D at the same res.
My 5870 is currently doing the job, but I want to go for a card that can potentially handle BF4 (not in 3d) maxed out.

It's why I was looking more at the 7970. Well mostly due to price as the GTX 680 is still around the R5.5k mark.
Perhaps I'll wait until I hear pricing rumours/details around the 9000 range of cards.
