Need Free Advise / Help :) with new website

Hey all
I thought i could make something to help my fellow members of the SAPS.
I registered a domain xtransfer.co.za . aim of this domain or site would be to help all saps members to find cross-transfers from one police station to another. we currently have something like that on our intranet at work . Problem is you can only search at work . I have a good idea what i want and how it should work . Members can search but would not be able to see all details unless they register and would also like a google maps thingy to show maybe where the stations are located. I have never made a website before . But I know i must have a db. to store all the data. The fields would not be that many . Name, Surname, Persal Number, Current station, where u wanna go and contact details basicly. I have a list of all the stations in SA by Province basicly so when you choose your current station it would be a dropdown to choose prov, and from there the station. Basicly the persal number of each member in unique so there cant be any duplicates. maybe even add e-mail tabs under the contact info .

This will help allot of policemen and woman to be able to get closer to there families if they are stationed outside the province where they stay

But as as i said im a total noob when it comes to things like this a friend of mine would have helped me but he cant anymore. This is gonna be a free site to them.

Do you have any html experience? Have you considered something like Wordpress to build your site, it might be easier for you if you do not have much html experience

Another friend of mine quickly setup wordpress for me on the domain so its time to learn for myself Thanks Jasper atleast you posted something in the range of free advise really appreciate it

Just a point of concern, perhaps this info isn't allowed to be in the public domain? Just a thought...

Other than that, I second Wordpress. It's quite easy to learn and use.

Try setting the site up and if you come across road blocks, then come back and ask for free help. I am sure someone wouldn't mind helping you out with any problems that pop up during YOUR project. Your original post just sounds like your looking for someone to do all the work for you. A developers time is valuable and most of them already have side projects they are working on. I doubt you are going to find someone that is willing to build a custom db driven site for free to spec...

Start researching MySQL/PHP get yourself a WAMP server or something up and running and have at it...

The info on the site will not affect any of the members really. It would help allot of police members and the information on the site would basicly be there so that people can swap contact details . If a member dont wanna put in his cell number then be it he can always just add his current stations phone number. there aint really information that can do any harm. Facebook has much more personal info.

We're here to support you as best as we can. But, its gonna be very difficult to find someone who will develop the entire site for free.

Do a lot of reading, play around, break things - and than fix it. You'll learn. And you will get stuck. When that happens, shout, and MyBB'ers will come to your aid.

Try the Wordpress idea, it sounds good to me. Fingers crossed for you, the first project is always the hardest!
