Need help buying LCD TV

I had a 42" plasma for 6 months and the thing started making a buzzing sound,so I took it back and got refunded,I then went for the 37" Mecer LCD which I have for 2 months now.37" Mecer was a good buy,good color,picture and sound. Reason why I changed from Plasma to LCD, plasma gets too hot, uses alot of power, and is very heavy,it gives off radiation, so I read.But I still miss the plasma because of the poor signal on DSTV,it looks better. LCD don't look so good on DSTV and the response rate sucks on LCD, better on plasma.
 
which set will make me feel good inside about not giving the money to starving kids in ethiopia rather?

and which set will make my willie feel better?

ooh ooh! and which set will make me call in sick so i can stay home and watch prison break from the start?

I have heard that the Mecer LCDs were pretty good as well. A vendor of mine told me that two companies in the world manufacture LCD panels (something which I havent confirmed). So most of the brands source it from either one and add some software to it and make it look better and that's the only difference.

Sansui has its own distribution in SA and that's why I bought from them. They seem like a decent company and offer a good warranty as well. I'm happy with mine thought at the time I bought it for R9999 and two days later they dropped it to R8999 :( either way I don't think u'll ever look back and regret the purchase of ur LCD.

Analog channels look crap on LCD panes esp SABC.

I'm sure more than two companies make LCDs. In Korea both LG and Samsung have LCD plants. In Japan, Matsu****a, Fujitsu, Sharp, Sony, NEC and I'm sure one or two others also make their own LCDs. NEC probably makes the best LCDs
in the world. In Europe, I think Philips is also probably doing LCD or is thinking about it.

So unless you are worried about very high altitude, power consumption and screen burn-in Plasma TV is still superior to LCD TV.

No burn in issues on my 2 year old Hitachi PMA400E plasma.
Pic quality is brilliant, still, despite seeing 1080P Bravias,
in showrooms, I'm gonna stick with Hitachi in the future,
if Plasmas remain in production.

Sony don't make LCD themselves, they have a joint venture with Samsung. LG and Philips have a joint venture in Korea. Matsu****a (Panasonic) doesn't make LCD panels. Fujitsu and NEC makes plasma panels, not LCD AFAIK. In Taiwan there are 3 manufacturers... the biggest is BenQ, AFAIK. And I'm fairly sure that there are, or will be shortly, some LCD production in China.

The producers with the latest technology in LCD are Samsung/Sony and Sharp.
 
I've neither of the two - but I *think* I'd go with Nebula on this one : I'd rather get a plasma over an LCD, purely for contrast/blacklevels. I've heardburn in is the thing of the past now anyway.
 
Dolby, just read my post, if you still happy with a plasma, by all mean get one, it's your choice.

You guys have just confused me more now. I was so set on buying an LCD as this seemsed the way of the future. But now seems that Plasma is still the way to go considering I only want to use for watching TV and playing DVD and not for games. I really dont want to waste my hard earned bucks and buy something that is not suitable - So which way now?
 
Hi Squareleg, I have first hand experience with both units and if you read my post above it will not be so hard to choose one technology.Think energy saving and long term.
 
I have a Mecer 32" and the pic is perfect. I don't know how I ever over the years used to look at an ancient CRT. This is still the cheapest LCD atm.
 
If you going to buy a lcd tv make sure its HD ready, you dont want to be buying a new one when HD becomes the norm in south africa.

cool. so you can just walk in? I thought they only sold to retailers?
 
They do only sell to retailers ,but they can only sell the LCD's to the general public. Just got off Computer Mania's web site and the 37" is now selling @ R10999 and the 32" LCD is selling @ R7799, Crazyman.
