Hi Forum,

I've wanted to create a website for years now but really have little knowledge about them.
I have a few platforms on social media that have grown but I want to link them all to the site.
My query is with regards to whether I can get away with a basic free website or if I should pay rather .
I'll get some traffic and obviously want to link some ads on it (adsense account already setup).

Please can forum tell me what the best suggested option would be ?
I think it would be easier to run off one of those website builders which involves no real designing skills.
The website can be extremely simple as I intend to embed Youtube links on the main 'video' section page.

I'm really clueless on this whole process and even if you can link me to some good articles to follow possibly?
I don't mind paying a yearly fee or upfront option if the benefits make more sense.

Any advice appreciated.
thank you forum :)

It's not that complicated just do some research however here are some guidelines :

Buy domain and hosting
Install wordpress (don't really need coding skills etc)
Buy a theme (or choose a free one)
Add GOOD QUALITY content
Include Privacy Policy page
Include About and Contact us page

Add your adsense codes.

Bank!

There are detailed posts but this should give you a headstart, also remember traffic is the key so once everything is set up correctly focus on getting some organic traffic to the site

Goodluck

This is good advice. If you are willing to learn a little about the above topics, you can do everything yourself and save some money. :)

Thanks very much for that outline!
Ok so the guy I'm working with went ahead and purchased domain and hosting from Afrihost (cheap R40 a month option).
We've registered the domain successfully.
I need help now as I'm extremely ignorant with how this all works.
Can you please tell me sort of what the next step is now? In terms of actually building the site and developing it before it goes live on the domain. Is this where wordpress comes into play?
I'm not too worried about a theme so I'll find a free one. We have a good content already and it's got a country wide fanbase.
The issue is they are all on social media platforms so we want to centralize it all to the site obviously.
So Wordpress is the next step correct?

Ok thanks - I think I'll need to definitely do that at some point :)

If you need help drop me a pm

Thank you - will do for sure if I can't get my head around this all :)

Ok I managed to get into the CPanel and will install Wordpress, wish me luck :o

EDIT - Ok I'm confused af here.
Installed Wordpress done -
Go to wordpress.com and now when trying to link the domain, it says :
' (site) is not available. Is it yours? Map it for $13.00'

Is that right? I don't mind paying to link it but just want to make sure I am doing the right thing

In your cpanel you should have an auto installer
Click install wordpress
Add the username you'd like
Add the password you'd like

Now to edit the website you will have to add "wp-admin" at the end.

Example: "mywebsite.co.za/wp-admin"

Enter your username and password you used at the beginning.

If the site says something like "service unavailable " etc it's probably not pointing to your host or give it some time.

Thanks for your reply.
I managed to install Wordpress successfully but get an error below when trying to access admin.
'

Not Found

The requested URL /wp-admin was not found on this server.

I guess I need to give it some time? I hope its just that cause I have no clue how to point to host etc :wtf:
I actually understand why people pay developers/designers to do this. It's quite a headache and I'm plain dom when it comes to all of this.

Yeah it's most probably a server issue, you can contact afrihost and ask for assistance if it's not working after a couple of hours or so.

Lol no stress. You'll get the hang of it and you save yourself some cash. Also when the site is up and content added, I'd like to see it, if you don't mind sharing the link or PM me it.

It shouldn't be a time problem..

They may have given you a URL like:
your-domain.122.122.122.122 (where the 122's can be any numbers) - try putting that in your browser ?

You do NOT have to pay any more money to anyone to have this working.

The Wordpress you're installing has nothing to do with "Wordpress.com", they are different, the one you're installing is under "wordpress.org" aka "self hosted"... But still, you need not to go to wordpress.org to access your site. If you've successfully installed your site, just go to yourdomain.co.za/wp-admin and enter user and password.

If you installed wordpress using an automated script such "softaculous" or whatever and that does not work, the more likely problem is that you installed wordpress with a "prefix", i think that's what is called. But it's something like "yourdomain.co,za/wp123".

If you like, you can PM me the information that you received via email when you installed wordpress. But you will manage to get it to work, it's always a bit stressing the first time.
