Hi I am working in an office with an old network that we are not allowed to mess with, however, this network goes down periodically and I and my team lose access to our server (not the main one, but our own which is in our office) which we need at all times. The politics of this keep me from being able to fix the problem so I need to find a solution on my own. I am trying to set up a 2nd wireless network within our office that I could put our own server on. It of course is easy to do that, but how can I still get access to our own server if I am in another part of the building using the main wireless network? I want to have it so that when I am on the main, wide network (network 1) I will still be able to access the server on the inner network (network 2). This way, when the main network goes down, my team would still be able to access our server as long as they are on the wireless (network 2) near enough to the office and when the main network is up, they can access it from anywhere in the building.

I have tried, but can't ping the router or the server on network when on the main network.

Is this possible? THanks for any help.

hi James

Well a few things we should look at is are all of the computers on the same network ,can they see each other, 2nd have to setup a wireless network on the main pc, 3rd have you configured the hub to allow incoming connecting ,3rd have you taken the windows firewall off the pc and activated internet security firewall, 4th , is it a suitable distance with a strong connection ,5th is all the drivers loaded to use wireless,

Hi James

Well it depends on to what extent you would like to run the second network.
If it is just the one server which you need to access it should be a cheap and easy solution.

In the case of only this one server you need to access. I would recommend 1 Ad Hoc Wireless Dongle's. You should be able to get this for R200(cheapest solution)

Set up an Ad Hoc Network on your server. If I understand you correctly your main network is also wireless. So if your first wireless network fails, its just a matter of clicking connect on the PC's situated close to the server.

I am not to sure, but on some network cards it is possible to connect to two different wireless access points or ad hoc networks at a time. If that is the case you could be connected to both wireless networks all the time, and when the 1st one drops you should still be connected to the server.

You can maby even use the 2nd wireless as a primary wireless for the access to the server to users close to the server. They will then not have any problems to access the server. If the first wlan drops then you will only lose the main office connectivety.

This all depends on exactly what you need. What the current network layout is.
There is alot of possibilities. Do you know what happens and the reasons why the network drops, where does the network drop.

If the server is already using the wireless network. You can use the built in UTP network card and maby set up a small 2nd network on a different subnet.

See what you think about what I just said, tell me if it makes sence. If not, please provide more information.

Firstly, your company is archaic in not allowing you to rectify this.
Secondly, define what you mean by the network goes down? does the wireless AP go down? Does a switch pack up?
*edit* Having only wireless access to a server that MUST be seen at all times is not the greatest idea*
