Just some feedback to those kind souls that have made suggestions. I got a guy .. Rod the Tree Doctor to come have a look and he's identified it as Ekebergia capensis .. or Cape Ash ..

Nice team effort here. Well done. And KarooKlonkie? An app would probably be an excellent idea, but how's about setting up a Facebook page in the meantime, where we could go post pics of local trees, and you could maybe identify them for us? Would suit the less technology minded? 
There's already the great www.whatspecies.com site, but it seems to concentrate more on local fungi than on identifying trees.
