Hi Guys

i need some input here...

i'm 3.7km from the local exchange. Using the Ethernet 2003/04 Telkom POTS modem.

now...i've got an intermittend synch -loss-connect problem. The modem runs fine sometimes for 2-3 weeks without any huge problems.

Then like today , 6am it just decides to go into freaky mode...
synch -loss - synch - 30sec connect-loss-connect-loss

its been going on so bad 2day ,i've dialed up by normal 56kmodem just 2 type this..

my main worry

i've had problems on the line before with ISDN...also an intermittend problem

Question
How the **** do u tell telkom 2 fix this?

i've tried:

another modem
RJ45 cable,
RJ11
running only from a UPS 2 ensure clean power
all of this when the synch "bug" is occuring

i've tested...there aint line noise
but what i can hear ,is that when the modem tries 2 synch-
u can hear a faint "electronic kinda hiss/noise"

if u plug out any phones, filters whateva , no diff in terms of synch loss

any ideas/comments/input 2 be greatly welcomed.

thx

Disconnect when called

I also have what I think is a sync problem, but it’s not so bad that I needed to report it yet. My connection is fine, but when someone calls me my upload and download rates drop to 0kb/s for a minute or so. I disconnect from any game or voip call, but the connection is never dropped. It even gets back to normalcy while you talk on the phone. It’s just that first ring...

I would appreciate the help!
Thnx

Alkine - do u have the neccesary filters attached for the phone?

Yes, we have 3 phones in the house (all on the same line). They all have the telkom port filter provided by telkom.
I also hear a peep (only one), like someone is pressing a button when i pick up the phone. Its really strange...

Are there any suspicious looking vans parked outside your home, maybe with scorpions in them?

Please note: I am only kidding ;)

ic, that was my first thought too!

Seriously Alkine, are you sure you're not being bugged?

I hope you get it fixed quicker than my brothers phone line was fixed [OUPA]MrNutz - best get onto Telkom ASAP and keep bugging them.

My bro's line was struck by lighting - took them 2 weeks to fix.
They'd sent Telkom oaks up from Cape Town to JHB because of the amount of line problems !

Obviously it's the weather we've been having and outdated/old lines.

Just check the amount of Telkom Vans around and about in N.Suburbs of JHB - freakin' hundreds of them.

hehe, it wouldnt be a good bug if it makes a sound on the line now would it? :P

Maybe it's an African bug - designed like a cricket - rubs its back legs together to attract a scorpion [errr I meant mate] :D

Arf, surprised thought the same thing - I thought I was insane for suggesting it.

Matt, perhaps those Telkom vans have scorpions in them...
which might explain why the more things appear to change, the more they stay the same

Hi

If you have more than one handset on the line I believe it might be a problem if not done correctly. I am not a techie but the wiring for multiple phones on one line is a techical issue because the wiring on consecutive handsets differ for some reason. Thus the wires in one wall outlet would be different from the others. You might get a situation where the phone will ring but only rings part of the normal ringtone and goes silent. It is infact still ringing, but there is a problem with the power in the line.

Did Telkom/pro install the extra phone sockets?

Cheers
Ant

Ive had my own battle with line voltage, any call would drop the ADSL link, I was told my phone was not compatible with the phone line, and the glowing leds under the keypad was drawing too much current, apparently it takes around 30 minutes to regulate the voltage again, so even my unplug the phone tests were tainted.

replaced my phone with a R70 Telkom unit (Marconi made) I believe, and the problem went away

Yes a telkom techie installed the lines. We first had a normal phone, split in two. One in the top of the house and one in the middle. Then we got ISDN and they installed the box in the lower part of the house, so we asked them to put a phone there too. Next we had ADSL installed and the guy ripped out the NT and connected all the wires.

Some of my friends also have more than one phone on their ADSL line but they only use one port filter and it splits up from there. I have to use three...

I dont seem to have a problem with incorrect rinning. Thanks for the tip about the phone, ill unplug all of them and leave one in at a time for a day or two, to see if the problem persists.

Thnx!

Well, i reported the problem to telkom, and they sent someone to fix it. The problem was that the filters was put on backwards... The guy that installed my adsl didnt have a clue what he was doing.

Something so small causes so much problems.

Thanks for the help!
