Whenever I double click on a saved .htm or .html file on the desktop or any other folder for that matter, Windows opens a dialog box stating that it cannot find the file in question.
At the same time Firefox, which is the default browser, opens the file without problem.
Afterwards I have to close the windows dialog box manually.

Any help with solving the problem will be greatly appreciated.

Format should fix that problem :p

Other than that you can check how the file is handled by Explorer, check the file association in explorer. Tools->Folder Options-> find html

Click change and select firefox, if that doesn't work I can post the specific (ie. when you click advanced there is a list of things there) information but it is so much typing and I'm lazy.

K well I made a screenshot of my settings, to make them completely visible I removed the full path specified for Firefox, which was in DOS 8.3 format.

IE it was c:\progra~1\mozill....etc...\firefox.exe -url ....etc....

Delete all the settings there and manually add this as open and set as default. If that doesn't work me thinks it might be best to disable IE in Add/Remove via the Program Defaults OR check the PC for viruses.

Thanks again for your time
My settings are like yours given on the link.
Done virus checks already with AVG and Avast, nothing.

Erm np, well sorry dude, can't currently think of anything else, wish I could help, only other thing I can think of is to use Process Explorer or just plain old Task Manager to disable processes till the error disappears then it is a program else it could be a service or a device driver installed by a program like SecuROM (not copy protection per se but something similar).
