Need help with cpu

I have a Core duo 3ghz cpu but my pc shows it as 2.4ghz. Why?

Where does it say 2.4?

As your PC boots up? (Settings in BIOS incorrect)

In a program like CPU-Z (Being throttled when not being used, normal)

In My Computer properties (Symptom of incorrect BIOS settings)

*edit*

I am no expert, as a disclaimer.

Speedstep will reduce the CPU multiplier if the CPU is idling.

You can either disable it in the BIOS, or you can change your power profiles in your operating system.

If your power profiles is correct, then it should ramp up the CPU multiplier to the max once the CPU is under load, meaning your CPU should run at 3GHz again under load.

Sounds like speedstep, don't worry about it. CPU-Z will show you the true clock speed. Speedstep is just for power saving while it's idle.

also if the ram is only capable of running at 667 instead of the 800 the CPU actually needs to run at 3.0 Ghz (for example) the bus speed of the system is lowered - my laptop does this.

it show 2.4 ghz in the bios. i have 667mhz memory in at the moment. will it show my cpu speed correctly with 800 mhz memory?

DarthCat, could you perhaps give us more details on the laptop (specifically the motherboard, CPU & RAM) that you have?
Did you change/upgrade your RAM?

Perhaps you should also upload a screenshot of CPU-z for us.

its a pc. mb is asrock g41c-vs with fsb 1333mhz, cpu is core2 duo 3ghz, memory is 2gb 800mhz and 1gb 667mhz
