I help run a small student bar at UCT. We are currently looking for a solution for the music for our bar. We basically want to be able to store and manage a large amount (250 - 500gigs) of music and be able to play it as playlists. We currently have an amp with a 4.0 speaker set-up and have an rca-to-stereo connector which we hook up to someone's mp3 player or laptop. This can be annoying as batteries run-out, people fade early or people just have crap music which can ruin a night.
There are a number of solutions I have explored. We have a TV right next to the bar which we can use as a monitor. I Ideally wanted to go for a netbook as its small size would mean it can easily fit under the bar (unlike a full laptop which is prone to spillage of drinks) but it is also easily stolen and probably a bit more than we need. I think that a cheap multimedia player will do which we can connect to the amp via rca and we can use the TV (via DVI) to manage it. Is this a good idea? Do you know of any cheap multimedia players with a good gui that might be able to achieve this?
A final option is probably to purchase an HP microserver and install something like open elec on it.
