Need some help with making my unifi controller and a few other things accessible from the internet using "unifi.example.co.za"

So I purchased a domain from domains.co.za, let's call it "example.co.za"

I've created a CNAME record to point at my dynamic dns hostname (I'm using noip)

and I've created another CNAME record for my subdomain

I've also added a port forwarding rule on my gateway to allow access to port 8443

This is the first time I've done something like this. Am I on the right track here?

Is it not DNS propagation you are waiting for? If its dynamic DNS you will probally want to bring that TTL down to like 60.

Yeah, it seems like that was the issue. At least when I ping the hostname "unifi.example.co.za", it's resolving my IP address.

I understand the concept of TTL but how exactly is it used here?

Well that TTL is how often nameservers must check your nameservers for an update. If its set to a large number and your IP changes, it will take many hours for the rest of the world to know about that change. Dropping the TTL down means the system knows to check for any changes to your IP every minute. Its just a good idea when running dns through a dynamaic IP.

Hi @Napalm2880,

You have a CNAME on the root of your domain, this breaks RFC's and will break your DNS zone.
The root of a domain can only point to an A record as a valid entry. Remove the CNAME on the root record and your DNS zone will start working.
