i just bought an extra hard drive and plugged it in and everything...
my computer shows the drive in device manager and says its working fine but it doesnt come up in explorer.
any ideas?

go to device manager

right-click on the partition/drive

change it to a different drive letter that's not in use

or you'll have to format it first ;)

i right-clicked on it but it doesnt show me where i can change any letters etc... when i clicked on "volumes" and then on "populate" i got:
disk: disk 1
type: unknown
status: not initialised
partition: not applicable

so i guess im going to have to format, huh?

Go to Control panel-Administration Tools-Computer Management-Storage-Disc Mangement-
Find the new drive, right click on it and Format the drive. When format is done, right click on it again and mark it as active.

You are now in business again.

thanks so much dude! was about to format my whole computer... just started backing up my saved games!

Dude, don't ever rush, you would've wasted a lot of time to format the whole system, if you're not sure, just ask until you get the answer ;)

im very impatient :) ... but super stoked that i dont have to format!

another question tho... i replaced my cpu fan today with a zalman and saw there was some sort of powder or something between my cpu and fan. what is that?
also, how effective is thermal paste? and how do you put it on your cpu?

I think you need to start a new thread about it. ;) I can help you, but it won't be worth explaining, maybe you're too impatient :p
