Hi guys

I actually doubt that with is a hardware problem but im guessing that the guys here are pretty pc savvy so here goes.

Every now and then my PC runs slow as hell then if i crtl + alt + del i see that my explorer is using 50% of my CPU...

Now i duno why its doing that but if i end it and just run explorer again it fixes it for a while.

Any help would be great

XP Home edition and was using AVG but got annoyed with it so got rid of it

It's probably one of your applications not working properly/not responding thus causing windows explorer to freeze/crash....

When that happens again, go to task manager, check if there's any apps that are not responding under application. If there isnt then go to process and see which application is using up the most memory.

When i do that everything is fine but explorer is using 50% of my CPU...so i just end explorer and run it again and its fine, for a while...

Check svchost.exe in the processes. It looks like you have spyware. First check that you dont have malware in the form of spyware or viruses. You need Remove junk files and your registry may be cluttered or corrupt ,but How about downloading very good free registry cleaner? Perfect Optimizer--- free for download from:
http://www.Easy-Registry-Clean.info .Your hard disk(s) may be fragmented. Windows has a built in defragmentation program but you can download a third party program for free:
http://www.auslogics.com .You may have too many applications kicking off at start up. This free download allows you to control what runs at start up:
http://www.glarysoft.com/quick-startup . It sounds like a mission but if that doesnt work then do what i always do: RELOAD OR UPGRADE YOUR O.S ;) :D

If you've no AV installed now (and seeing that AVG got annoying?) then it's quite likely your PC is infected, without any AV you'll never know, so just reformat and reinstall, make sure you use the latest service pack ( SP3) for XP.

If you're not keen to go that route straight away you may want to try CCleaner, is quite good at finding issues.

Option A, Reinstall windows, make sure that you format the whole drive. Or upgrade to Windows7

Option B, Move over to Ubuntu, its user friendly, its blazingly fast and its not prone to viruses.
