Hi all

My harddrive is packing up and so thinking it is time to go legit. I want to get a copy of Windows 8 Single Language DSP (also known as system builder) from Esquire with a new hdd, but just want to make sure I understand the licencing correctly. Would really appreciate some clarification from anybody who has gone this route.

So based on the personal use licence:
Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.

My understanding is that I can do a fresh install on a new harddrive and then also change from motherboard to motherboard as long as I'm only using the software on one PC at a time. Is this correct?

It sounds like it. I had heard that they had changed these terms slightly for Windows 8, because with prior DSP licenses the OS could only be installed on ONE pc for it's entire lifetime and could NOT be transferred.

But, if it is an OEI version, then the same previous restrictions apply.

Thanks Gary!

For others, think I have found the clause that makes it clear that the personal use licence will be ok and is transferable between motherboards here:
Q. If I am using OEM System Builder software to build my personal computer, does the OEM System Builder Licence apply to me?

A. No, to use OEM System Builder software for personal use, you will need to read and accept the terms in the Personal Use Licence.
