Phone Sentech and Bitch, its the only way things change in SA, read the threads, some people are having major problems on the speeds.

try using the tips and tweaks from theRodent's website (url is in his signature) - if those don't work then you're probably one of the unlucky many that have been experiencing poor service for the last few weeks.

That wont make a difference. The problem here i suspect lies with sentech, althou if you can get them to admit that then you are a better man than me

You can of course get a cantenna and try hunt around for a different tower or different sector (frequency). In my experience, this is how I solve my speed problems. One sector sucks ass and the other works fine. Its been like this since the major slowdown and after complaining a number of times nothing has been done. So its a hassle when the switch off the towers during the daily random tower 36PTA reboot.

You may be lucky and find good service on another sector. So find a cold spot where you only get 1 light or less and then reset the modem (or cover antenna) until it locks on to another frequency. So the cantenna has dual-purpose:antenna and signal blocker (if placed over the modem)

Inevitable, do me a favour

You saaid in another post you have kazaa

Find two files that have many sources

Start downloading both
Does your speed got to 1.5Kb/s each or can you get them both to
3Kb/s, so 6Kb/s in total ??

Thanks

dont use kazaa. use bittorrent or download a file from a local server (or international) using flashget.

you can get a nice variety of links at http://www.mirc.co.za/get.html

to avoid confusion, this does not mean use MIRC - just download the install. You should see it spike over 10KB/sec (at least) in flashget. bittorrent will depend on seeds etc.

I wouldnt use kazaa. It sucks nowadays. Even emule is faster for more (but still slow) and better IMO.

Erm, I dont think it's a good idea testing speeds against unstable connections. Kazaa is the most unreliable source for downloading in my opinion.

Find a local ftp server. With least amount of hops and something big.
IS hosts a freebsd installation.

If I want to see if I have bandwith problems, I download from is.
When connection is good, I get 7KB/s from is. I feel this is alot more reliable than downloading from some kid's pc in iraq.

Ofcourse, if is has bandwitdh problems ... it's another story.

Anyways, choose a consistent and local and close by and powerfull source. Use something like getright to download and max out connections.

Ofcourse... that's just my 2 pennys.

I wouldn't count on IS, as they limit their bandwidth to anybody who's not a direct customer. Maybe saix would be better.

I'm connected to Hurlyvale (126) and am downloading from my office at around 13K, which is being served over ADSL, and sofar have had no problems

I`m connected to a Linux server with a firewall, how do I open port 6881-6900 for bit torrent ?

What flvour of Linux firewall are you running?
- ipfw
- ipchains
- iptables

I'm running IPTables. I'm using a script I found on the forum. Script's name is rc.firewall.

So far every thing is working beter with my linux box except for bit torrent.

Thanx
