Hi All,

I am trying to help someone out with an old HP Z400 Workstation. It is not starting up.Looks like something is pulling down the PSU. I have been through the changing of peripherals (including Graphics card and PSU) with no joy. I suspect it is the CPU because if I don't connect the CPU power connector from the PSU then it at least powers up, however no way to be sure. The gy really wants to avoid changing the motherboard because he has some very expensive software on it that has it's license linked ot the M/B serial number.

Any suggestions (preferably in the Durban area) where I might get my hands on an old Intel Xeon W3503 Processor? Even if just to use to test with to confirm my assumptions?

Thanks

CPUs usually don't die, have you tried a different PSU yet?

Sadly it could be the motherboard. Sounds like the VRM circuit for the cpu has an issue, cpu itself wont usually cause the psu to go down

Thanks. I know chances are it's motherboard. Just trying to make 100% sure. Tried new PSU. Sounds like I need to be the bearer of bad news.

Some of the older i7-9x0 cpus will also work on that mb i think.
