Hello,

We recently started using a wifi isp. I would like to monitor our internet up and downtime.

I tried to google software that could do this but usually they need to reside on the router itself?

I would like just a simple application that could record the event when we can't connect to the internet and also record the duration.

What would be really beneficial is if I could see this as a green light on top of the screen. For the end users who keep nagging me saying they can't reach their mails but in the mean time the internet is dead..

Would it be possible to also test if the mail server could be down? if so how? I would like to be able to see that in a red or green light on the software dashboard too.

How much would this cost me? If I had to ask a programmer to create for me?
Note I don't pay very much yet as I am a Jr Technician, this is just something I want to assist me in doing my job.

Cheers

If you are not afraid to delve into Linux, smokeping is really nice. It builds up a nice history over time of latency and outages.

Thanks to all your inputs. I haven't yet found an application that I understand how to use :P

About the linux option I would have to set up a vmware option on the pc for this to work. My office is not likely to spend more on an extra pc.

Cheers

Looks like this smokeping is a perl script.

Free and OpenSource Software written in Perl written by Tobi Oetiker, the creator of MRTG and RRDtool

If that is the case you can always run activeperl on a windows machine and use it like that. If it needs a web front end, nothing stopping you from installing apache onto a windows machine.

I've downloaded all of the above but can't seem to get it running :p

I tried to look for a youtube video that explains how to install a script inside Activeperl but only saw a tutorial on smokeping. What a crumby application >.>

When you mean downtime do you mean packet loss or periods where you are totally down.

The dude is simple to setup, there is great wiki help on how to set it up. You can setup probes for e.g "ping" to email you, or to log it, if there are packets lost.

Also depending on what router you have it should be able to log events, e.g the mikrotik routerboards.

So you are looking for a app that will ping something every x seconds and log it?

What OS are you on?
A Windows 7 gadget would work well ....

If you dont come right let me know and I'll write a basic one for you.

EDIT:
Have a look at this Gadget it will probably do what you want, you can set some IP's to ping and their frequency.
