Need some advice from an electrician

I went to help some friends out to replace some plugs in their house as theirs was rusting away and sockets weren't working. I bought some new crabtree outlets and upon removing the old socket the metal enclosure in the wall was so rusted it basically disintegrated into dust. The conduit that runs between the outlets is all metal. Now that I have to replace the enclosure and the plug I'd like to know from an electrician what the rules are around mixing plastic and metal conduit and enclosures for sockets.

Would this be a problem?

If you have an earth cable in the run then no need to worry. If it is only pos/neg then you need to find a way to secure the earth cable to the conduit.

Metal conduit was essentially used as the earth for electrical systems which is why in most old houses with these setups, the wires were only black/red with the earth on the socket fixed to the metal box.

At least that's how my house is

no issues involved ,as long as the earth on the outlet is good youre A for away ,there must be an earth conductor present(bare copper 2.5 mm) and as long as everything is secure with no chance of the wires getting chaffed ,youre ok .just make sure when you pull the plug out you cant rip the whole assembly out of the wall ,use rawlbolts if possible if needed .

Yes there is a separated earth that runs through the conduit so I'm pretty sure its not using the conduit as the earth. Its one of those things where I'd rather ask a stupid question than make it worse.

no such thing as a stupid question when electrics is involved ,what sounds right and logical in the head isnt allways so.
 
Not an electrician, not even a lekkertrician!

My 10cents:
My first house had no earth cable, it used the the metal conduit/metal boxes as the earth.

Replaced for various reasons, but we had to run new wires which included the earth (edited).

yes houses done up to the late 70s used the conduit as an earth ,no earth leakage units really yet ,when the machinery and buildings act changed around 79 thats when earth wires started to be included in the act ,but i can still coc it as is if its original using conduit only as long as the resistance is good its ok .but at the coast it wont work very well .
