Hi ;)

As per a previous thread I started today, our town and it seems area had a network problem today, lines would sync, but no PPPoE connections could be made. I confirmed that 2 people I know who have ADSL experienced the problem we did.

The strange thing about this (Garyvdh is going to have a laugh), this afternoon when I tried to use the internet, I would be able to use it for about 3 minutes, or just a few sites, then the connection would die. I saw it died in the router as well, the router just stayed on "connecting".

I managed to narrow down the problem this morning to the fact that it's my Toshiba laptop's wireless that is "refusing" the router to connect.

I have a Billion 7300M using the latest Firmware (07/2008).

I am using WPA2-PSK AES encryption and my ESSID was usually hidden, but for some reason my laptop refused to connect today so I changed the setting to show it.

The narrowing down of the problem was basically this:

I sat for close to 15 minutes, listening to music and looking at the router Logs and the text that said "connecting". I decided then to disconnect from Wireless, waited a minute or two then I connected via wireless again, all of a sudden the internet connection was connected. I doubt it's just coincidence. The wireless connection is causing the router to drop the PPPoE session and won't allow it to reconnect. I restarted the pc previously as well (Garyvdh, lol) and then the internet was connected for a few minutes.

My memory is poor and after upgrading the Firmware on the router recently, I could not remember which channel number I used before when it worked fine. I've switched between channel 6,9,11 and 13, I'm currently on channel 9.

I use Europe regulation domain on the router.

I've got the Toshiba and my brother has an Acer with wireless as well, running XP, so I have to find a common ground so both laptops can be on the network.

Sorry for the long post, but I tried to be as clear as possible.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

tera

Edit: seems I was able to type this whole post and submit it with the connection being stable.

Hi teraside,

If I were you I would try resetting the router to its defaults (consult the manual regarding this) and re configure everything from scratch, as it's relatively quick to do this.

That way you can narrow down the problem by enabling each security feature until you find the problem (or hopefully you don't find the problem).

Hi Raven.

That's just my problem. I didn't write down my Wireless settings prior to upgrading the firmware recently, so in fact everything was reset at defaults and I did configure from scratch.

I'm hoping someone with Wifi knowledge will be able to help.

Also make sure that you did not update the Wifi card driver using the Windows Auto Update. I did this thinking it was a good idea and then starting having similar problems to the point that I wanted to smash my router, but every time my desktop using a USB wifi dongle would work. I eventually reloaded old drivers and have no more problems.

Yep, haven't done that.
it might not have anything to do with your wireless connection

it might be that telkom is either busy upgrading or repairing a line in your area you can check this by logging in to your router in a web browser using 192.168.1.254 as the address and admin & admin as default username and passw click on status and check your line attenuation if that is above 60 and your snr is lower than 5 you know your line is bad

and you change the channels on wireless if there are a lot of wireless units in the close area all using the same channel , its just so the signals doesn't interfere with each other

hope you get it solved though

As per the original post, I'm currently on channel 9, but my ESSID is still visible.

The connection seems to be stable on Wifi on 3 laptops at present. Strange thing though, I truly doubt it was a Telkom issue, as soon as I disconnected the Wifi on my laptop, the router could create a PPPoE session, so it might be the router at the end of the day?

I have another issue though, my laptop just randomly, completely random freezes if I am on the wireless connection at times, especially if I stream something from the desktop.

Sounds like the wireless card on your notebook is buggered. I had a similar issue with my Fujitsu Siemens Notebook. Had the wireless adaptor replaced and has worked seemlessly ever since.
