I am currently using DSL, but I'm moving in FEB so I have taken 3G from MTN, as I do not want to put a phone line in my new pozi. I have some questions:

1. Can I use 3G from my cellphone on my home PC if I connect it via Bluetooth? Or do I have to get a Data card?
2. How is Skype on 3G?
3. If my 3G connection is on at home, is it permanent or do I have to log in when I want to use it?

Help is appreciated.

1. i can use my cell as a modem with 3g when connected by USB don't have bluetooth on my PC.

2. Donno about skype

3. 3G if u want u can stay connected for ever.

I believe your not allowed to use voip over MTN. I think...

OK, I really need help on the skype issue.

Also, when I connect my phone to the PC, and connect to the net, it says 114k/s, GPRS not 3G? Should it not be faster? And mebbe say 3G instead of GPRS?

you are going to miss phone calls if your stay (or are) connected.

1) Its your choice. I find with my 6680 if I do more than a hundred or so MB per month, I have to charge the battery quite regularly. A data card would be better then I think. As you had ADSL, you are probably used to doing at least a couple of hundred megs, if not more.
2) Dunno, don't use Skype. I think the latency might be a problem though.
I don't have MTN 3G in Stellenbosch, on the other network international pings are at least 600 ms to 1000 ms. This can be a problem on Skype.
3) You can log in and stay connected if you want, I am not sure about disconnect times when idle, but there are ways to keep the connection alive.

Fanx so far

I also see guys talking about changing channels, blah blah, what are they on about? I don't c settings like that on my phone (6680). And is it ok if my pc says gprs connected at 110-125k/s, is that the speed of 3G? And who has tested skype?

Hi

1) You can use your nokia 6680 as a modem via blue tooth or usb cable

2) Unfortunately MTN does not skype on 3G

Thank you

Thanx MTN

That issue with skype, is it limited by MTN? And will that change in the future? And may I ask y?

I have posted this before, but anyway:

MTN does not not support it or prevent you, they just don't want you to. Here's an extract from their terms and conditions:

http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=232081

"In terms of the current regulatory regime in South Africa, please note that these tariffs and the MTN GPRS, GPRS+, EDGE or 3G technologies may not be used to transfer or generate Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) traffic. Should it be found that VoIP traffic was carried over the MTN network using these tariffs or technologies, MTN reserves the right to cancel the agreement that you have with MTN, with immediate effect. You will also be charged retrospectively at R21.93 per Megabyte (VAT excluded) for any VoIP traffic transferred by such means."

Coz they will lose out. It's cheaper to use voip than to phone to UK on your cell. That's a big no-no.

voip

HI Cube

Thank you for the explanation MTN thus not support voip

Thank you

I take issue with MTN's bully boy tactics regarding barring of VOIP. But all you have to do is to buy a pay-as-you go sim, use skype, and then discard it when they get all huffy about you using it, buy another one etc. etc.

I still don't see a satisfactory reason why you shouldn't do it. Rules should be challenged, especially if they are unfair.

I did you no favour MTNSPBB. I agree these are unfair regulations.

Many people are doing it regardless, I'm sure. It is conditions such as above that prevent SA from competing more fiercely with other countries.

And why is it that your responses are slow, often incomplete and generally meaningless? Why does the Vodacom forum have a dedicated, quick-responding rep but we have nearly nothing. The members are left to battle it out themselves because they cannot dare phone 173 or 555 or even 808. The responses are unreliable, vary to extremes and frustrate to the point of insanity.

MTN, get your act together and fix your helpdesks, websites, marketing department and reps. It is nothing less than pathetic. Have some pride, for G*ds sake!

I must be honest Cube, you are right. I have PM'd the MTN guy for more explanations, and he sent me the exact same response. ROFL, I think he may be a bot!

Must be honest, I have 2 contracts with MTN for 6 years now, just resigned them both, but their service has been getting very pathetic. The only reason I'm with MTN is because 3 of my clients have 0 Vodacom coverage and I can't afford no calls while I'm there. Otherwise I'd switch.

Anyone know if any of the other cell providers penalize VOIP?
No one else has anything about it in their conditions hence should be ok.
I used Skype with Vodacom 3G; works fairly well...not 100% though..worth the Rand saving.

The new imate JasJar has Skype loaded on it..wonder if MTN will delete the software when selling ite...stupid policy > not allowing SKYPE >>they will still make money ....maybe even more as some guys will use it just for the fun of it.

Think of the possibilities: we both have imate JasJars ; we call each other using Skype and not voice! However a minute on Skype should use about 1mb ( someone please clarify/rectify ) so MTN still makes at the worst case ( if u on a 1gb package ) 49c plus the guy you call also uses 1mb = 49c so they still make 98c per minute...if you on another bundle it could be 62c x2 and so forth....they generate revenue irrespective...

Hey maybe we should nickname MTNSP "RubberBand". I've been with MTN for 4 years, and b4 that Vodacrap, but you know, they're all the same. So switch, but don't expect anything better. The only thing going for Vodac**p has going for it is they are the market leaders. MTN are the sheep - "What's Vodac**p doing? Oh we must do the same..."
