Hey guys ;)

My girlfriend has an N70 on Vodacom. I'm moving in with her and leaving my adsl connection behind.

She's got a contract of R300 something a month. Can I buy a data bundle seperate to use on her phone, or should I just get a new sim and go PPDB on that?

I've got an older Nokia 6230i, so I can't use it, as it only goes up to EDGE.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
tera ;) :D :p

HAHA!

Anyway, on-topic,

Would be best imho to get a sim from CNA or something at like 50c (no im not kidding, saw the CNA sell Vodacom and MTN sims at 50c last week).

PPDB would suit very well, puts no extra hassle on anyone to do it that way.
And get a modem or upgrade your own phone to HSDPA, so you wont have to swop out sims and thus put her out of contact with the world while youre busy.

Best advice is fork out the cash for a Modem and use pre-paid bundles (You can get a second hand E220 for +/- R800 if you shop around). If you are not against a contract then the Top-Up contracts with "free" modem give you to control of pre-paid with a fixed monthly spend.

If the initial lump sum spend on a modem is an issue, for a decent up-to-date modem, then this is IMO definitely the best option.

@teraside, do not sign up for any other type of contract == bad, or just use a pre-paid SIM card if you can afford to buy a modem for cash - otherwise consider the TopUp contract which uses the PPDB system for data bundles == good.

Wait, t3ra has a girlfriend  ;) :D :p

When did that bus drive past me?

Getting serious, I'd rather not use her phone - unless she offers and she uses yours or something - else her phone will be MIA all the time when you are on the interwebs. But other than that, EDGE ain't that bad if you got nothing better. Either way prepaid is the way to go.

Thanks guys ;)

Could you explain to me a bit how to do this though:

Let's say I buy R100 airtime and load it on a prepaid sim. Do I just convert it to a DB and if so, how?

What is the best amount to load from the 3G connoisseurs?

Yep, if I use my girl's phone, I'll just put her sim into my phone, she's cool with it.

Thanks

Easy tera.

Just send a sms, telling Vodaqua what you want to buy.

For example, if you want to buy a 500 MB data package, send the following sms to 100: MYMEG 500.

If you want to buy a 1 GB data package, it's : Phone nr : 100 and message MYGIG 1

For the different tariffs, check www.vodacom.co.za .

Or use the vodacom USSD menu:
*111#
Menu 2 - Bundle Purchases > Data Bundle

That is of course after you have loaded some airtime.

I think Vodacom also now has the 30 day rollover , in other words your bundle can last UP to 60 days if purchased on the 1st of the month it will only expire on the 31st of the following month .

Yep, it's in the link I posted. Here it is:

Pretty cool if you ask me :p Cool thing as well. There's a 3G tower about 2 to 3km away from me pointing straight at my flat, yay :p Used about R50 OOBR yesterday, which made me go  though :p

LOL, seems I'm also lucky with the Vodacom towers.

I just did a speed test where I live in Mouille Point and getting :

3.7Mbps download

1.02Mbps upload

Not to be sniffed at. :)

Pretty cool :D

The N70 gave me about 43kb/s yesterday, which is fair in my opinion, not bad at all. I'll see how the finances go in coming months, then I'll fork out for an HSDPA modem or something.

Thanks again for all the help. I guess I got lost in the void and needed a little direction :p
