Need some help with Excel please

I need to create an if function in excel that checks the date of an action in the cell and will highlight it different colours depending on how far away the date is from the current date. Almost like a warning as the due date gets closer.

If someone could give me a rough idea how to do it that would be amazing

I'm not a master with exel and would like to also learn formulas, what is conditional formatting?

Excel > Format > Conditional formating:
Condition 1 - Formula is: =(TODAY()-E1<10)

(where E1 is the cell tested and 10 is the amount of days old.)

Add as many conditions as required.
