Hi guys. I'm currently with Iburst and want to switch over to ADSL in the new year. (Tired of iburst service going backwards instead of forwards).

On Iburst I get a download speed of 100kbs. Now what I want to know is: I have been looking at a ADSL offer from SAOL http://www.saol.com/ (R499p/m for uncapped ADSL on a 384k line). Can anyone tell me what download speed you get on this line and about how much ping you get on Wow and Modern Warfare 2?

I need all the info before I can deside if this is for me or not. Would really appreciate help.

You can work out the "maximum" download speed by dividing the overall kbit speed by 8. Thus, a 384k/bit line would give you a download speed of around 40k/bytes per second. Your latency will depend on your proximity to the exchange, among other things. Speed of the line does not influence latency - but I can pretty much assure you it will be better than iBurst. You're probably looking at anywhere from 400-800ms on WoW.

thats right. expect between 38k and 40k a second max download.

latencies should be better than iburst and you can choose between many different isp's compared to just the on with iburst.

I was hoping for a bit higher download speed but heck, at least then it's an ancapped account :D

If you are looking to play WoW, I recommend investing in an unshaped account as well - will drop your latency to around 250-350ms.

Where can I get that and how much does that cost? Also exactly what benefit will I be getting from an unshaped?

AFAIK the SAOL accounts are unshaped if I remember correctly from reading that thread.

In a nutshell:
Shaped = optimized for HTTP traffic.
Unshaped = No port shaping is put in place. (for non standard ports such as FTP, Remote Desktop & many gaming apps etc)

which offer btw, the R499 one?
btw, the terms read-
This offer is subject to the signing of a 24 month contract. A set-up fee of R1500.00 is applicable and the preconfigured router is on loan for the duration of the use of service.

SAOL & Cybersmart will offer you that for around R500 including adsl line rental.

Anybody that goes for a 24month contract now must be mad!
I think I have changed my ISP about 4 times now in the last 6 months.
