Hi
thanks to you all for helping me make up my mind, so I saw it today and am going to buy it, now just two more things
firstly I need to connect my home PC with the laptop (when I buy it),just so I can download some of my songs. So I thought I'd use a USB bridge cable, is that the way to go? If not what is?
Secondly I want to get a wireless mouse I saw a cupple microsoft ones, but am not sure which make I should buy. Hellp would be appreciated.

Thanks again

It would be nice if you give us a hint of what it is you're going to buy bru ;)

for the mouse you want a small compact one or a gaming one or an ordinary one?

Hi danny, no, you don't use a usb cable to connect your laptop to the pc, you use a network cable, I'm not sure what types of network cables there are (I'm not that informed, I don't lan etc.), but if you buy the latop ask the place where you buy it from for a network cable, about 2 or 3 metres long, it should be about R20- R50, depends.

Then you need to come to myadsl again and start a thread on basic networking ;)

To connect two computers, you need a LAN cable - pretty much any computer shop can sell you one. Just ask for a normal LAN cable.

Then, on both computers (assuming they're both running Windows XP), go to Control Panel > Network Connections > right click on Local Area Connection > Properties > select "Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) from the box > Properties, then select "Obtain an IP address automatically". Click OK or Close on all boxes.

Then go to Control Panel > System > Computer Name > Change. Give each computer a different name, but the same workgroup.

EDIT: Plug the cable into both computers... knew I'd left something out!

Your network is now set up (a restart on both machines may be a good plan at this point).

To make a folder on one computer accessible to another computer, right click it and select "Sharing and Security", tick "Share this folder on the network" and press OK. You may need to enable sharing the first time you do this.

To access the folder on the other computer, go to My Network Places, click on the link to Workgroup Computers on the left. You should see your two computers' names. Double click on the "other" computer's name, and you should see the folder you shared. Now, you can copy files just like normal! To copy to the other computer, you'll need to tick "Allow network users to change my files" when sharing the folder.

Bet I've left something out ;)

You are probably not going to get far with a normal straight LAN cable.
Make sure to ask for a cross-over cable, if I'm not mistaken??

For anything below gigabit Ethernet, then yes, you do need a crossover cable. The gigabit Ethernet standard, besides increasing speed, also introduced the technology to sense whether a crossover is necessary. The crossover is then done within the NIC.

This applies if either one, or both, of the computers have a gigabit NIC, which I presumed a new laptop would have... if not then OOPS! At least he will have a spare LAN cable ;)
