K,

So I had set aside a spare hard drive to load ubuntu on, the other day my brother took a hard drive out of my parents pc and put it out on the table by my pc, I ended up taking that hard drive instead (since I thought it was the one i set aside)...now I'm feeling pretty screwed.

Any advice as to how to proceed? Can a recovery be done on a hard drive thats been formatted to ext4?

Thanx in advance

You may have some luck with this
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
However you should only attempt fixing it yourself if you really know what you are doing or you will just make a bigger mess.
Once my drives filesystem got screwed so badly that the computer thought that it was fat12(supposed to be NTFS) and I used the above mentioned program to fix it.

Thanx will try that program and see what it picks up

UPDATE - 5 hours later and about 30-40 of 80 gigs recovered, which is fair amount in my opinion :)

Well if data has been written to that drive after the format then some that has been overwritten will be gone for good.
