Hi everyone,

Im having some difficulties here. Im assuming its cos Im not a network guy. This is the setup I used to have:

My PC - connected to internet via dial up
My Development PC - No internet connection. I connected to it via my pc above with remote desktop connection to do my work. Used a cross over cable to do this
Other pc (Wifes) - connected to internet via dial up

Now ADSL is installed. I set it up as follows with a Telkom WIFI Mega 100WR:

ADSL modem/router connects to my pc (via USB for now)
My wifes pc connects to modem/router via ethernet cable
Development PC - no internet connection needed

All pcs' work fine except I cant connect via remote desktop to my development pc anymore. I get a "specified computer could not be found" error message.

I took the cross over cable from my development pc and plugged it into the back of the ADSL modem on port 1. The icon there is a pic of a computer network. I assumed port 1 was for either cross over or normal ethernet cable. I thought I could connect to it via the router?

Everything works except I cant connect to my development pc via remote desktop. Can someone please help me here, and tell me how to fix it? Please...:(

You normally use a straight cable between PC and router. Try the ethernet cable from the wifes PC on the development PC, if you can connect with remote desktop then the problem is the cross-over cable. Replace the cable with straight cable.

Yeah, you only use a cross over cable when connecting directly to another PC. As Franna said. you need a normal network cable. Most computer stores sell them, or make them up to your required length

OK...so Im half way there now. The ADSL modem came with a ethernet cable. I plugged it in my dev pc and the other end into the router. I can now browse my dev pc's contents via the run command...so the cable works 100%. BUT, I still get that error when trying to connect via remote desktop connection.

Has the setup of the ADSL router changed some settings? Any ideas on how to fix this?

Try connect both PC's with ethernet cable, it doesnt matter what type of cable it is, it should still work.

Well the setup now is everything is running through the ADSL router. It must be some sort of router config issue? I tried connecting pc to pc, but it started throwing a whammy and then the adsl stopped working...

'scuse me if this seems like a dumb idea but could it not be a firewall or port forwarding issue on the router. I know remote desktop requires a certain port which you may have to set on the router. Also double check your windows network settings to allow for remote desktop, a setting may have changed when you installed the router.

I don't think the cable matters, all my cables at home are crossover and we have seven PC's including next door on same plot all connected to routers and switches and alles!!

Thanks Jonny. Recon that might be the issue, but Im not network knowlegable...so Im running through things trying to figure it out....no such luck yet...

Alchemist - Went to the site and they have info on how to setup remote desktop here:

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Telkom/Mega-100WR/Remote_Desktop.htm

Followed the instruction and set it up like they said. Then they say at the bottom of the page "Thats it, you're done!". Well, that cant be it, cos after I did that, I tried to connect to my dev pc again via remote desktop and got the same error message again. What am I missing here? I feel like such a noob...

Yes static IP's vs Dynamic IP's might also be the case. Make sure your PC's are assigned static IP's, I know XP has an option to set an alternate IP address. Im assuming you can keep one Dynamic for ease of Internet use and make the alternate configuration static eg. 192.168.0.50 - 51 - 52 for each pc. Keep subnet 255.255.255.0 on all.

I think you prob know where to find this but just in case the long way is to go to control panel , network connections (or network and dial-up) , [right click - properties] on the LAN connection , highlight Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click properties :p

If you know your internet gateway setting which is probably 10.0.0.1 or 2 then you can set static IP's all around without bothering about alternate.

DNS issues can also cause this I reckon, depending on the software you are using for remote desktop however Im also assuming you are using the built in XP remote software. If not rather connect using the IP address of the PC rather than the PC name.

Otherwise Im fresh out of ideas :(

Ok, got it sorted. My dev pc was using a static ip address. I just changed it to automatically detect settings, same for DNS. Problem sorted! Woo hoo!!
