Hi all

My mom is needing to buy a new TV, preferably a Samsung 32" LCD Full HD, USB ports would be a bonus, at the cheapest price.

Where is the best place to look in Cape Town or online?

Is Samsung the better brand over the others?

Thanks for any advice.

What will your mom dearest be watching on the TV?

In my experience, moms and dads like watching mostly DVD/normal TV/sport. All standard definition/lower quality. Which suits entry HD Ready plasma more than entry FHD LCD.

The only reasons I would advise 32" FHD LCD would be if your mom has space limitations (i.e. existing cabinet, which is unfortunate as it was likely designed for CRT TVs) or has a good collection of Blu-ray content/1080p console games.

Samsung is generally regarded as the better brand. I would say Samsung > Sony > LG. Samsung and Sony are close though, as they use PVA panels (joint venture). LG uses IPS panels, which are generally regarded worse than PVA (poorer blacks and viewing angles).

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but i am also looking and don't want to post another new thread

I am looking to buy a new tv and would like some help, to make a decision.

I mainly will use it to watch tv(dstv and HD, Sport) and then also DVD and Blu-ray and also some PS3 gaming.
The room is well lit and I sit about 3m from the TV. I get some glaring from the sun in the afternoon. My budget is about 15k

OK so LCD or LED or Plasma

Is there a big difference between 100Hz and 200Hz

Should i consider 3D(its a nice to have)

I thinking about a 46' maybe the Samsung 6600, but I don't seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks

Depending on how big a factor the sunlight/bright room is, you'll probably want LED backlit LCD (AKA "LED"). How much watching will be done while there is direct sunlight? If it is important to not have any glare then LED/LCD is for you.

If majority watching when there is no direct sunlight, after hours etc, you would probably want to consider plasma since as a technology it generally favours lower quality media (TV, DVD) and motion handling (sport). This isn't such a biggie when you can afford mod-high end LCD/LED, which have caught up. Perhaps more importantly, plasma offers bigger sizes for cheaper, which may be important since your viewing distance is 3m which is quite far.

Not too clued up on LED-LCD models but UA46D6000/D6400 with 200Hz should be good enough. I'd say as long as you have 200Hz try go for biggest size. 55" might be out of your budget though.

Samsung don't have any mid-high end plasmas in SA unfortunately, you may need to look at Panasonic or LG. Unless it's last year's C Range from Samsung.

Geez - generalization ... ;)

Recently was also looking to purchase a 46D6600, but eventually walked out with a 46D6000.

For me the R4500 price diffs was not worth it; motion handling between 400Hz vs 200Hz CMR (200Hz vs 100Hz engines) was not really visible, Skype & Web browser SmartTV Apps unneccessary , integral WiFi not needed.

Ultimately the decider was better edge-light uniformity. All the D6000s I saw were near perfect, while some D6600 (& D7000) had patchy light uniformity when displaying test .jpgs.

Thanks I will definitely look at the option, then use the rest of the money to buy a 32 for the bedroom :D
