Hi all.

I'm new to this wonderful forum. I'm on the Lite Unlimited package and need some help on the following.

1. Used Emule (P2P) for 2 weeks without a problem, then suddenly got the low id problem. I haven't changed my personal software firewall or any settings on my side. Do I have to request any ports to be opened and why, as I never had requested anything in the past? Also, do I ask for all incoming ports to be opened or only the 2 that Emule uses (1 TCP and 1 UDP)?

2. Errors Received in the Dial-Up status (I'm referring to where it says Activity / Sent / Received / Bytes / Compression / Errors. Under Errors, I receive lots, like 15 in the first 1 hour of surfing and the longer I'm connected, the more errors - I've seen them go into the hundreds. When I e-mail consumers@neotel - I never get a reply. I don't know if this is normal, are there any out there who experience this too?

3. Frequent disconnects: Under dial-up status - I'm still connected but the modem lights turn orange and it disconnects me until a open my browser and go to a website. This happens so many times, I just wonder if that is the way the device works or perhaps mine is faulty, any suggestions/advice?

Hello and Welcome Marty McFly :)

1. All default ports such as mail, http etc. are open but everything else should be blocked by default because the device is a modem and not a router. I think some may have requested all their ports to be opened, but just request the ones that you use.

2. By account of the forum, majority of Neotel users are currently experiencing tower congestion. We all experience the same problem with packet loss, errors and slow speeds.
Best you call customer support and open a 'trouble ticket' then chase it up with head office, just hope they attend to your query quickly, after 2 months I am still waiting on a solution. You will need to supply your RSSI and PN when calling to customer support for the Trouble Ticket so check Here on how to get RSSI and PN before calling in.

3. Yes with the Neo-connect devices when there is no internet activity the connection drops (but says connected bottom right task-bar) and only resumes once a request is made again. That has been really irritating for me as I find performance definately drops when that happens and is a matter of disconnecting and re-connecting to get your speeds upto scratch.
There are a few tricks to keeping this from happening, such as running a constant ping to a server or using the tool of your choice to make sure there is some form of internet activity constantly. For more information about this see: Here and for Keeper's Program Neoping which works well to keep the connection active NeoPing

You must have a newer Lite device, my lights turn green not orange.
What are your speeds on Lite atm ?

I get these speeds at the moment with an external antenna, 3 months back was getting 18-20kB down.
Last Result:
Download Speed: 40 kbps (5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 21 kbps (2.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Hi Kasbah!

Thanks for your reply.

Two months on a "trouble ticket" is a long time, seems like Neotel is similar to Telkom in terms of customer service. I hope you come right with your issue, what is it about by the way?

Seems we all have similar problems with disconnections and speed drops. I thought I might have been the only one. Thanks for the advice on Neoping and the RSSI and PN.

My screen lights turn green, but the keypad lights turn orange.

My speeds on Lite vary between the following:
Download Speed: 96-120 kbps (12-15 KB/Sec transfer rate) - This is the highest I get.
Download Speed: 40-80 kbps (5-10 KB/Sec transfer rate) - This is the lowest I get and is usually when my connection drops and the lights turn orange, but still shows me as connected.

Upload Speed: 40 kbps (5 KB/Sec transfer rate) - This is the limit I set on Emule, so I'm not sure if my upload speed can go higher than this.

I will give Neotel a call today and see if they can sort out my port problem. Will let you know how it goes.
Cheers :)
