Hi all

I've finally got my Neoflex device after a couple of weeks and have a few questions. I went through the manual and the forum but things aren't always straight forward. Any help would be appreciated.

1. In the manual it says that the "Connect" led "informs you that the modem is connected to a wireless network and passed through the user/password validation". What does this mean? I connect the modem to my computer with the lan cable. So why is the green led on?

2. In the manual it says that the modem has some firewall functionality. Must I still install Zonealam or Norton Internet security or something like that?

3. When I connect, how does Neotel know that it is me? I don't enter a username or password or anything.

4. I installed the access manager as per the instructions. When I try to open it, it says that I must "Please insert valid RUIM". What does this mean?

5. When I turn my computer and the modem on, it takes a few minutes before I can connect to the internet. I sometime also seems to lose the connection. Is this a common issue?

6. I use firefox. When I go to the settings in the network tab I select the radio button that says "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network". Is this the correct one?

Thanks for the help
G'bye

Good luck sir, thats all I can say!

Good morning!

You should have a little document in your possession that came with your router welcoming you to Neotel and outlining some basic setup steps.

I am no tech-ninja, but for what it is worth, here is my input:

1. In the manual it says that the "Connect" led "informs you that the modem is connected to a wireless network and passed through the user/password validation". What does this mean? I connect the modem to my computer with the lan cable. So why is the green led on?

The connect light indicates that you are connected to the Neotel Wireless network and that your username and password (stored on the router, and typically pre-configured) was correct.

2. In the manual it says that the modem has some firewall functionality. Must I still install Zonealam or Norton Internet security or something like that?

Absolutely. Unless you are 100% confident that you can correctly configure the router to block any unwanted access to your computer. I still prefer the added safety of something like ZoneAlarm. And a good Antivirus solution (such as Antivir at the moment...)

3. When I connect, how does Neotel know that it is me? I don't enter a username or password or anything.

The username and password are stored on the router and would most likely have been pre-configured by Neotel. You can see the router configuration by opening your web browser and entering 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.

4. I installed the access manager as per the instructions. When I try to open it, it says that I must "Please insert valid RUIM". What does this mean?

The access manager is next to useless. It is intended for people using the Neoflex device as a regular USB modem. However there is a bug in the software that makes it look for a SIM(RUIM) card in the device. Neotel does not use SIM/RUIMs in their routers, so the software often does not work.

5. When I turn my computer and the modem on, it takes a few minutes before I can connect to the internet. I sometime also seems to lose the connection. Is this a common issue?

There are so many issues with the Neotel network... Just have a look around the forums. Depending on your coverage and how busy the network is, your connection will be periodically dropped. The router will attempt to re-establish the connection. This is not unusual.

6. I use firefox. When I go to the settings in the network tab I select the radio button that says "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network". Is this the correct one?

I was instructed to do a similar thing by a Neotel tech support staffer. I dont think that really matters, you should try with just connecting straight to the internet.

Hi,
The welcome letter and installation guide that was supplied with the product provides instructions on how to set up your service. It should take a maximum of 15minutes max to get you up and going.

Most of the questions you have asked have been answered by the previous poster.

Thanks Monkey for the help. As for the Neotel rep. Your reply is just another example of the arrogance with which Neotel is treating their clients. The user manual and your guide is as user friendly as a visit to the proctologist. And btw, I lost my connection as I was trying to post this reply.
