Neotel and remote Desktop

Hi Guys,

I'm using VNC Server at home to remote desktop into my machine.
Current setup at home is Neotel Prime into Desktop via USB.
Netgear Router then connects all other devices in the network and ICS running on Desktop.

Now I can VNC from any machine on the local network with the local Ip address.
For some reason, the External IP wont let work.
So there's some issue in handling requests from the phone to the desktop.

I know this would be handled with Port forwarding on the router but what about my situation?

Hi PeteGT

You still need to map your respective PC VNC port's to the virtual server port's in your router configuration.

So for example your 1st PC uses port 5900, map to virtual server 5900, your 2nd PC change to VNC port 5901 and map to virtual server 5901, your 3rd PC change to VNC port 5902 and map to virual server 5902 and so on.

Some routers don't allow the same name for the service or more than one of the same service, so for your 2nd, 3rd PC's you might need to rename the added VNC service to VNC1, VNC2 etc..

Then to connect to them it's a matter of: yourhost.dyndns.org:5900, yourhost.dyndns.org:5901 and so on.

Internal works fine through the router.

As above, that is my an example of my configuration at home, it works for me so cannot see why it shouldn't for you, unless you have Ports that are still blocked by Neotel. My Desktop PC that dials up is GNU/Linux with the necessary IP Tables(firewall rules) and Router configuration in place to allow the forwarding of the various VNC ports.

Have you allowed access to the VNC port's in your Desktop's Firewall ? (do a quick test with the firewall disabled) I presume you are using either Windows XP or Windows 7 so would be a matter of allowing the various VNC ports assigned to each PC in your firewall be it the Windows firewall or other Firewall of choice.

Are you using DynDNS or No-IP software to keep your dynamic IP updated with a domain name of your choice on your Host Desktop PC ? You will need to allow access for that software through your firewall.

My setup at home is:
Internet ----> Neotel USB Modem ---> Host Desktop (GNU/Linux, with No-IP software) ---> Router1 (DHCP enabled, wireless enabled, various VNC ports mapped in Router) ---> 2 x Cabled PC's

------> Router2 (Bridged with Router 1, wireless enabled, DHCP disabled using static IP ) -----> 1 x Cabled PC

------> Laptop and BlackBerry's operating off wireless

I am therefore able to access any PC or device via VNC on my Home network with the above setup. Hope you come right as it's just a matter of trial and error. I have however setup a more complicated system making use of an internal DNS/httpd/IRCD/sshd server.

PS: Check with Neotel on which ports are open, many moons ago I made certain I had all my ports opened as I would rather manage the security side myself, if you trust me get me on IM and I can nmap you to check or make use of www.canyouseeme.org/ and make certain.

I'll try the Firewall.
I just thought I might get a rejected response or something if it was blocked.
All my Neotel ports are unblocked so it should just be a matter of the firewall.
I'll let you know how it goes

You were right, it was just the Windows Firewall. all sorted now.
