Thought I would start the Lite Thread seen as there is a Prime

Speed Test Results after 2 months service, not as fast as Prime but I'm still happy as it's all uncapped :)

http://www.speedtest.net/result/335016462.png
Download: 137kbps (17 KBps)
Upload: 74kbps (9 KBps)
Ping: 879 ms

Note: Upload and the Ping has improved since taking on Neotel

This seems extremely slow. Just tested my adsl for the first time and this what i got.

My wireless MTN card is about 3 times faster than my ADSL.
Does this mean Neotel is very slow??

edit: 384 adsl line.

not great at all, but what I would expect from the lite package..

Speed Test Results after 3 months service.

Download: 135kbps (16.479 KBps)
Upload: 32kbps (3.9063 KBps)
Ping: 928 ms

^^ Best Results in a few weeks
NB: Neotel technician that came to my house and "promised" the ping would improve, you lied to me. (Nothing worse than someone who lies, if you had told me it would get worse that would have been ok) I am now calling Technical support and true as heck sure hope you get sent out again as I do promise you I am going to kick your buttocks.

I LOL'ed :D

Umm Kasbah, you maybe careful as what you say as that could lead to legal issues for you!

First it was "I didn't have service" now it's "Ok I have service, but I want to assault the support staff" - how fair is that?

I was careful, reason why I edited, the Technician knows who I am and it's a personal joke for him when he reads it :p As for your quoting - you do not speak for me as those are invalid quotations.

On the serious side of things, I am still optimistic for Neotel's service but not satisfied. Download speeds are the same more or less, Upload and Ping are getting progressively worse.

Once again, thumbs up on your identification, admission and appologies. Seldomly find someone mature or decent enough to do this online.

+1 for CriticalConsumer's character ;)

1. Is the 137kb/s peak ?
2. Is the 17 kb/s @ the busiest of times?
3. Which speed do you experience most?

Thanx

1. Yep 137kbps (17 KBps) seems to be the best I can get on speedtest.net
2. Yes all my tests posted have been done in the mornings (business hours)
3. When downloading either http or torrents I average around anything from 120 (15KBps) to 136 (17KBps)
^^ Signal Bar indication 2 or 3 bars.

Saturday Morning Test 15 November 2008 (Best Results):
Download: 134kbps (16.75 KBps)
Upload: 34kbps (4.25 KBps)
Ping: 1353 ms
^^ Signal Bar indication fluctuating between 1 - 3 bars
-- I am now finding it harder and harder to get the best signal, bearing in mind I stay 1 block away from the Base-Station (approx 100-150m).

edit: 384 adsl line.

Lucky you, you're 384k adsl is faster than 384k, how did you manage that? Not trying to sound sarcastic.

I think those speeds are pretty good, it's about half the speed of 384 adsl IMO, at least my 384. The cost for telkom 384 adsl is around R400-R500 with a 2gb (3.6ish actually) cap.

Are the pings on Prime better? I'm not a serious on-line gamer but I want to be able to play some bf2 at least. These speeds are okay I think but not that 800ms ping I don't think.

@Kasbah, do you mean to say that your signal has dropped since starting using Neotel? Has either your upload or Download speed been affected?

I read somewhere that basically wireless networks detioriorate as more users are connected to base stations, surely the same will happen with Neotel?

Since I have had Neotel both the Download, upload and pings have been more or less consistent, just lately I have been noticing deteriorating signal clarity which in turn has lowered my upload and pings performance, not sure if it's weather related as we have been having alot of rain lately so will try keep a monthly update of a speedtest result to try see a pattern. Everyday now I find I have to shift the Device around to get maximum possible signal clarity (anything ranging from 1-3 bars, cannot get that elusive 4 bars back again) so not sure if that is more user load related or not.

I have had the Prime device at home to test and was blown away by it's performance (The Prime device suites me much much better as The Prime gets much better signal clarity than I do on the Lite device, but hanging on for the Rev A Series or FO before I think about migrating packages)

I am a little worried about the kb/s in brackets.
I am mainly looking for a connection for downloading movies and TV series.
I don't sell it... but won't wait a year for it to get here... like Hero's.. lol

Anyway... I am only prepared to switch to Neotel if it stays above 50 KBps
What is the figure in brackets... morning - peak - etc.
Please give a little more on it
Thanx

The KB/s in brackets is the measurement of my maximum download/upload speed in KiloBytes, the figures before that is my measurement of speed in kilobits, I just put the KB conversion there as most people go by the KB but is not exactly accurate and kb (kilobits) would be more accurate ... bearing in mind kb != KB.
Data communication 1 kilobit = 1000 bits, while in data storage 1 Kilobyte = 1024 Bytes,
For a good understanding of the difference and values check out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilobyte
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Measuring_network_throughput

For easy conversions I use: http://www.speedguide.net/conversion.php

If you are looking at speeds above 50 kBps (Kilobytes) or 409.6 kbps (Kilobits) I would recommend using the Prime Device as you can see from my previous tests the maximum download speed using the Lite device achieved is: 17 kBps or 137kbps

Mine is close to yours... uncapped at R250 with Uninet
Not happy with it either but who else gives uncapped @ decent prices

CT-CT
Download: 66 kbps (8.8 KBps)
Upload: 35 kbps (4.2 KBps) (another test was as higher at 62 kbps)
Ping: 181ms (not sure if this is better

CT-JHB
Download: 63 kbps (8.2 KBps)
Upload: 59 kbps (6.4 KBps)
Ping: 189ms (not sure if this is better or worse)

With this speed it is possible to download about 500mb of data a day
but then you have to hog the pc all day

My friend in NZ does 500mb in 3mins... we can only DREAM... lol
